Howdy peps.

Is it possible to take the spider gears out of a open 8.8 from a explorer with the 31 splined spiders.

And install them into a limited slip carrier in place of the 28 spline spiders?

Yes but the 31 spline shafts will not fit in a 28 spline housing.

Very true. The 31 spline axles are bigger at the outer end too and take a bigger bearing.

I think I have a set of the 28 spline spider gears (oipen) but aren't they different than those used with a L/S? Never dealt with them much other than the PowerTrax install.

Missed that part. Yes open spider gears are different from LS spider gears as well.

Its been a year since I had the 8.8 28 spline L/S rear end open. So My memory of the rear end might be faulty.

What I am interested in doing is taking the 8.8 28 L/S spline out of my ranger since it still needs a tranny. and I am having zero luck finding one. and possibly install it in the explorer.

Using the existing bearings in the explorer would address the bearing issue. What I seem to remember was the spiders backside surface for the L/S being different. The hole for the shaft on the carrier didn't seem small I seem to remember it being larger somewhat then the 28 spline shaft.

And if they are too different. which I do expect honestly. I am just exploring(that was bad I know) possibilities. Is it possible to just buy the spiders for a 31 spline L/S and put them in the old carrier?

The 28 spline axle tubes taper down to a smaller diameter near the spring perches and the 31 spline tubes don't. Since the bearing are outboard of the perches, the 31 spline bearings won't fit in the 28 spline housing, and the shaft diameters are different so that wouldn't work either.

You can put the whole axle in the Ex if you swap the perches or if it's already SOA. Just don't beat on it.

The only parts I was interested in moving around were the spiders from one open carrier to the L/S carrier and then put the L/S carrier into the explorers 8.8

So the axles/tubes/bearings. never move off of the explorer.

NO!

NO!

1) The axle pinions are not interchangeable between the 28 and 31 spline carriers.
the "pilot" oin the back of the gear is larger on the 41-spline gears and the OD of the gear is physically smaller

2)the spider gears themselves are larger in diameter f0or the 31-spline axles because the spider gear cross shaft is itse;f fatter in diameter.

The 28-spline cross shaft is 3/4" dia, the 31-spline shaft is 7/8"

The carrier and pinion bearings are the same, the gears are the same, nothing else is.
