I have thought HARD about putting a 302 in my 86 Bronco II.. But I really Don't want to molest it. If my current 2.9l takes a crap, can someone recommend a company that has a good 2.9l engine to replace what I have now? I know Jasper has no 2.9l's

Surprisingly easy engine to rebuild. Have done mine, doesn't take any special tools.

Everytime I have had my rebuilt, it usually lasts about 3 years. Last one I did. was bad from the beginning and they company shutdown and disappeared. lost my butt on that one. That's why I was hoping for a good honest company with a crate.

Considering the 2.9 is already a ticking time bomb when built "right" I'd assume a jasper built 2.9 would have similar reliability to ACME products...

Go fire up the fiesta and run along.

Adults are talking.

The 2.9 is a great engine as long as you maintain the cooling system.

If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
I second the vote of no confidence in Jasper and agree that you should have a local machine shop rebuild yours. I don't understand any rebuild lasting only 3 years but rebuilt means different things to different people, there's another post talking about a "rebuilt" 2.9 that didn't get new rings or even a valve adjustment. Rebuilt should mean that everything has been thoroughly cleaned and inspected, machined as needed, and all the wear parts- rings, bearings, timing chain, etc- have been replaced, and a new oil pump installed just because. It will cost more to do it over than it would to do it right.

These days remanufactured just means they clean it. If they are feeling charitable that day, they may replace any visibly broke parts. They do the absolute bare minimum to get the engine out the door. Same with anything (reman starters, alternators etc). Your paying for a scrap engine and hoping they did enough work that it'll last more than a few thousand miles.

Having an engine rebuilt by a machine shop means your paying that place to do the proper work and returning it to better than factory condition.

In most cases the prices are nearly the same between a reman and rebuilding so.... good god why would anyone buy a reman?

May i ask what makes you think your 2.9 is on its last legs?

Contrary to what youll read from most here, the 2.9 is actually a pretty hearty little bastard.

It hasn't crapped out yet. I have had 4 engines already installed in this. I just want to be prepared when this on takes a dump. But I didn't want to just get any old rebuild, I was hoping someone out there might make a GREAT reman...

Four engines?

Son... What are you doing to those 2.9s?

Mine is at 285,000 miles and I have abused mine to the point where the last thing I can do to try to blow it up is cram a supercharger on it.

So. Yeah, what the hell are you doing to those 2.9s?
