I was exaggerating the MPGs on his F-150. Sorry guys. He really gets about 17 mpg. The truck has a few motor mods and a lot of rear suspension stuff for hauling heavy loads. He gets the same MPG pulling his camper or not pulling anything at all. He just needs a decent DD that's good on gas. This C-maxx just kinda fell in front of me about the time Pops asked about a smaller car.
C-maxx is based on the Focus, but it's a crossover, so it's taller. For the record, the Ecosport is essentially a C-maxx, from what I understand.

I would recommend the Focus (older friends have one, they like it), but it's low.

Another option (not necessarily better) would be an Escape.

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
We sold some C Maxs and didn't have much trouble with them. I liked the way they drove. A couple had battery drain issues that we fixed following a TSB that was released for the problem. I processed a buy back on one we sold because the customer had moved away and the flat rate dealer near her new home couldn't/didn't/wouldn't fix it after many tries. The TSB is quite involved and time consuming, my hourly rate hybrid tech was- and still is- meticulous.
The one Escape hybrid battery we replaced generated a $14,000 warranty claim. Last week a guy in Norway strapped 60 lbs of dynamite to his Tesla and set it off after getting a $22,600 quote for a new battery. A used hybrid or electric car is something to avoid.
18000 dollars of that was shipping and free college and health care.

Cause it's free

I wouldn't even say that. My brother had a Honda Fit and it was impractical af. Slow, small, and cramped interior.

I've only driven a first gen Fit, but it never struck me as any of those things.

I've only sat in his. He didn't have it very long. Nobody in our family wanted it, so he traded it in, he was a mechanic at his local Honda dealership for a while

I always thought the Honda Element was a good idea. Manual trans, all wheel drive.

Hondas are great, but they carry a premium price tag, like Toyotas seem to do. I'm looking for something reliable, but not very popular. People selling cars tend to do " surface research" and if they have something remotely close to a popular car, they add to the selling price. The Fit and Prius are very popular and so the prices on those are high. I'm actually trying to get him to look at a Maverick, but he ain't trying to buy a brand new vehicle. He likes my Santa Fe, but they are also going for a premium.

Agreed re the Honda/Toyota price tag issue. One of the weird things I've run into over the years is that sometimes their luxury brand equivalents don't hold the resale as well. Because of that, I've bought an Acura MDX when I was looking for a Honda Pilot, a Lexus ES300 when I wanted a Toyota Camry, and an Infiniti QX4 when I was on the hunt for an SUV. In each case, the luxury versions turned out to be cheaper than the more stripped down versions I'd initially picked out. Same basic mechanicals underneath, just optioned up a bit inside.

I'll second that. I loved mine.

I was always amazed at what mine was capable of, and what I could fit in it. When the 2012 Focus (compact car) came out, I sat in the back seat of one, with the front seat all the way back. I had more room in the Fit.

As for slow, my Fit had more power than my '90 Ranger.

I've only driven a first gen Fit, but it never struck me as any of those things.
I've driven a first gen and a second. I found them both to be more than adequate.

The last Hondas I had any interest in were the 1998-2001 Honda CR-Vs. The ones after that were made into "soccer mom" vehicles and the ground clearance of a car. The Element shared the platform with the 2002-2007 CR-Vs. So, were pretty much in the same boat to me. Perfectly fine vehicles if you have no plans to do more than gravel roads or well maintained dirt roads. I did like the rubber floor that the Elements have. And if I remember correctly, the interior was a bit more flexible than the CR-Vs ever offered. The Fit came around after I had gotten out of the cute ute seen. So, I know very little about them. I know a lot of the HR-V fans were interested in them as a possible replacement.
