Our recently acquired 09 Ranger 4X4 FX4 manual transmission takes some patience when making the 1st to 2nd upshift. Sometimes it’s easier with a low rpm shift, sometimes a high rpm shift, sometimes I make a circular movement while in neutral and it goes easy. The 3rd to 2nd downshift is always easy. Is this likely just in need of a new shifter or shifter rebuild kit, or is there something in the transmission that could cause that. I don’t remember my 2000 Ranger ever having as much play in the shift, but it had much lower mileage. Any ideas?

since I haven’t yet serviced it yet, I will guess it has the Mercon V atf that the manual recommends. Once I make my shopping list and buy all belts, filters, fluids, etc, then I’ll find out for sure what’s currently in it.

if it uses the same shift assembly below the stick as the other m50 transmissions, there is indeed some plastic looking bushings that wear and break into a million pieces. when i put that core shifter assembly on my truck, i ordered all those pieces from rockauto incase i ever need to sell the truck (because i am 100% keeping that expensive core shift assembly).

i will look for where i posted pictures and come back and link for you

ok. its easier to just link you to the thread about that shifter. you can see in the post with the install photos where the parts are broken on the stock shifter ball and when i took the blurry picture of hte transmission input area, the broken pieces still in the shift ball area.
