Hello everyone. I am trying to track down an issue with the airbag light in my 2009 Ranger. When I start the truck the airbag light comes on, goes off briefly, and turns back on solid. No blinking for a code, just solid light. The couple steps I've taken include checking / replacing the ABS system fuse and cleaning the electrical connectors under the passenger seat.

Any ideas of where to start?

My credo
Keep your mind like an umbrella, it only works if its open... Continually learning.
Welcome to the site. You could go to autozone or other parts store, they should be able to read the codes.

I would start with getting the codes so you know what is turning on the light. From there, You can decide what you want to do. If it’s the passenger air bag, you can look under the dash for wiring issues.

If your truck has side curtain air bags in the seat, you can look at the wiring to the seat.

If it’s the driver’s side air bag, your getting into clock springs and other challenges.

The suggestion on the air bag recall might be a good one. They might not cover the repair, depending on what the issue is but at least you’ll know what the problem and fix is.

Chances are good, you’ll qualify for the air bag recall and you might get lucky and kill two birds with one stone.

My mechanic has tried to solve the air bag issue of passenger air bag light staying on and he said his scanner does not communicate with the ECU sensor and SRS system and advises that the ECU sensor is probably defective and should be replaced. Any advice on solving this problem would be appreciated. Owned since new, the truck has 128,000 miles and I have put a good bit of money into repairs over the last couple of years - shocks, complete AC repairs, tires, new clutch and master cylinder, resealed leaking rear window, radiator hoses. The only other ongoing problem is the 420 OBII code has been popping off and on for several years and apparently I need to replace the catatlytic converter. I have gotten quotes of about $800 for new converter, but warranty is only for 6 months. My son and I have driven my 1998 Ford Ranger XLT (4x4, 4.0 L) for several years with the air bag system disabled. I need to bite the bullet and fix both problems. Any thoughts?
