Just bought a 2008 Ranger XLT 2.3 with a manual that the engine is blown out of because they tried to tow it behind something and left it in gear! So I have a nice rust free Ranger that needs an engine. I know I can stuff another 2.3 in there easy enough but can I upgrade that to a 4.0? How hard is the swap? Thanks for your time and input!

Welcome to TRS :)

Put another 2.3l in there from a 2004 to 2011 Ranger or Mazda B2300

When you switch engine sizes that means a new engine and transmission, plus computer and wiring harness, plus exhaust, plus...............and the list goes on
And on the 2004 and up there the PATS and digital dash to deal with, so one more thing, well two more things, lol
And you can just go out and buy a 4.0l Ranger

The V8 swap was popular because Factory never made one, and its the same work as any other engine size change

X2 with Ron - sorta. 2.5 duratec out if an escape. Cheaper used ($600 range with warranty) and a nice power bump.

Your pcm should run it. Reflash may be needed. Thoroughly compare wiring diagrams.

Better version of same engine.

As a matter of opinion, I've been watching for the right year for my 2011 soch. The sohc is a letdown. Meh fuel economy for a glorious 206 crank hp. A modified and tuned 2.5dt will near that with better fuel economy. Turbocharging is bolt in if you wanted.

2.3eb will fit. So will 2.0eb. They are gdi, though. Which means much more complicated wiring, imo, save it for your project truck.

I do remember @bobbywalter having a few posts on it. I dont remember if 2.5v6 and 3.0v6 are same bellhousing or not. 2.5v6 is a cool little engine. Wide heads though. 3.0v6 is like the Vulcan, torque is late into rpms.

Project truck category stuff

Power difference between a 2.3 and 4.0 is really not enough to make a swap worth it in my opinion. As has been said, tons of work to change to a different motor with very little to gain. I vote just find another 04+ 2.3 unless it's a project/toy, then go nuts.

Thanks guys, I think I will stick with the 2.3 because its easy. If this was a loaded truck and a better color I think I would do the V8 swap and have something really cool. Thanks for all your advice!

Cheers,

~Stuart
