From here on down it's uphill all the way!
There are a couple of good how to's on You Tube on removal of the instrument panels. Unfortunately they only go up to the 2003 model. The Haynes manual does not list a bulb for the '04 and later Rangers and my '05's owner's manual says, "To replace all instrument panel lights - see your dealer".
I have been driving since 1961 and will be dipped if I take my truck to those freakin vultures to fix a burned out dash bulb!
So I remove the instrument panel tonight and pull one of the 11 bulbs. I figure to replace all of them at once and not have to deal with this problem again. The truck has under 70K so they should last till I die if I do them all.
I get a magnifying glass to read the print on the bulb as they are about the size of a swollen grain of rice. It looks like the bulbs come installed into the plastic 1/4 turn holders and say: TSD 4 26W X 14V1.
I am going to NAPA Auto Parts tomorrow to see if I can purchase some there and avoid the local (Anderson Ford) dealer here in Kingman, Arizona. Don't even get me started about their attempts to bleed my clutch when I bought it this Winter. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Any advice would be appreciated!

NAPA was helpful but the locking plastic base for the bulbs they suggested were the wrong design. They sold me one to take home and try for 88 cents. It did not fit. So I go to the local Ford dealer. The counter guy actually apologized for the fact that they had 44 bulbs available at a price of $44 each!
I then went to a couple of other parts places and they could not find a bulb to fit. What the heck! My next stop was going to be the local Pick a Part to buy an entire gauge cluster.
I did an eBay search and found a vendor in California who stocks colored LED bulbs. I ordered a set of 20 for $18 shipped. Since my Ranger is black with red accents I thought this would work. It looks like they sell you the plastic bases along with your choice of a T5 colored bulb that you push into each base.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

They are on older trucks. I don't know if his are different.

Rangervet,
Sometimes you can remove the bulb from the base and reuse the base with a new bulb. If that's the case, you just straighten the little wires out and pull the bulb out of the base. Install the new bulb and fold the wires over the base like they were originally.

Also, there are some indicator bulb circuits that don't like LED's because they have a different resistance. The ones for general lighting are fine with LED's and leave the dimmer on its highest setting.

I poop in the furnace.
If I remeber correctly the 194's still fit in the base but are too big to fit in the actual instrument cluster on the third gen trucks.

My world is filled with stuff that needs to be fixed
I THINK it is an Eiko 2721 bulb, which crosses to a bunch of stuff in this link: https://www.eiko.com/ProductSearch/ProductDetail?partNumber=2721

Possibly an E37 or E73 which should be the same size. The E73 is about half the brightness & twice the lifetime. I'd have to measure the current draw to get a better idea of which one it is.

Looks like AutoZone has the 2721 https://www.autozone.com/electrical-and-lighting/interior-exterior-light/sylvania-interior-exterior-light/16865_0_0?source=pepperjam&affiliate_id=43737&click_id=2677714300&ppjmid=43737&cmpid=AFF:US:EN:AZ:NL:1000000:GEN:ppjmid43737-8-11065

pjtoledo. Is that the Mackinaw Bridge? My youngest daughter is working at the Grand Hotel on Macinac Island this summer.
Here is a pic of my 2005's instrument panel.

it most certainly is the "Mighty Mac" . that's ice, not water in that pic.

Michigan trivia: only Mackinaw City uses the English "Mackinaw" spelling.
the bridge, island, straits, and county are the French spelling "Mackinac"
both are pronounced the same

is that a Vietnam emblem in the back window? I only made it to Okinawa. '74/75

excellent choice on your Ranger

Yes. Vietnam 68-69. Desert Storm 1991.
I landed on Okinawa once to refuel in 1969. My dad was a tank mechanic in Patton's 3rd Army in Europe. After the war ended in the European Theater he was shipped to Okinawa to prepare that island for an attack on mainland Japan. The bomb was dropped when his troop ship was 3 days out.

This is the eBay seller I used: autodayplus. The exact price with shipping was $14.99 and they arrived from California in 3 days. The kit included LED bulbs and inserts to fit several different cars. I simply pulled the bulbs out of my instrument panel and installed the appropriate sized LEDs into the existing black plastic inserts. I have too much going on this weekend so I won't have time to reinstall the instrument panel. Since the LED bulbs can be installed backwards I have a 50/50 chance that they will work. I have read that if one of them does not light then you just flip the bulb around. There were enough bulbs in the kit to have 1 extra bulb.
Here are some pics. The first pic shows what they sent, the second shows what I actually used. I will be glad to help if anyone has questions.
