Recently purchase a 2003 ranger with a custom flatbed. Just prior to purchasing it the previous owner installed new shackles. This is my first ranger of this generation and rear tire clearance seems low with stock tires and rims. I owned a few early 90's rangers, explorers and F150s so my knowledge of this generation is limited. The rear leaf springs just look rather flat. Looking to get some input. Looking to go with bigger tires but first want to make sure the suspension is right.

It looks like the clearance should be ok comparing the frame to spring gap. The only thing I’m not sure on is how much extra room would be taken with axle flex on uneven terrain.

As far as replacement springs, there are three load levels that I know of off hand, 1050#, 1250#, and 1750#. Which yours should have would depend what your rating sticker says. Both my ‘98 and ‘11 came with 1250#.

step back a few feet and look at the body line on the door. with close to stock size tires the line is real close to the top of the front tire, and about an inch above the rear tire. your rear shackles appear stock, from here.
