the rear breather should go up to a clip on the frame rail, not the fuel filler area, though lots of people extend it to that location so it doesn't suck any air in...

My credo
Curb? What curb, I felt a speedbump
I have a 2003 fx4 (not lvl II) manual with electric 4x4 and the forged Alcoa wheels but I have the 60/40 bench

I had a 2000 FX4. It was called the Offroad back then. The FX4 was in the suspension package, skid plates etc. I had the original window sticker for it. And it wasn't cheap, almost 27k. I sold the truck a couple years ago. I miss the uniquenesss of that truck. I went over to the dark side. Driving a Tacoma TRD Offroad now. It's a outstanding vehicle but, everyone drives one like mine.
The other day I spotted a 2003 Ranger FX4 Level II at a "buy here, pay here" dealer nearby. It's got the wrong rims on it and no radio but all else is there with low miles. I contacted my local Ford dealer parts for verification. The dealer said the only way to verify if FX4 Level II is by VIIN. I gave them the VIIN and they verified it is a FX4 Level II. Going truck shopping again.

Update on old post. Sent in for a Marti Report. They own the rights to most of the Ford production VIN's. Give them your number and they prepare a report based on that. For my 2003 FX4 level 2 they show total of 5795 FX4 level 2/off road packages made.

I find it interesting that it says only 8,755 trucks were built with the 4.0 4wd 5 speed combo. Surely there was more then that made as they only made a billion rangers.

Then again the marti report for my '92 2.3 4x4 shows only a little less then 2500 built...

That's 8,775 "2003 Ranger 4x4 Super Cab 4-door" built with the 4.0 5 speed combo.

That's not including other years or body styles.

Still could have been more 2003 regular cab long beds, regular cab short beds, or even super cab 2 doors built with that engine/trans combo and 4wd.

Well, did I just get lucky? Bought an 2003 Fx4 the other day with an automatic transmission, and just under 98,000 miles on it.

On a side note. I am looking at an 03 ranger that they place says is an fx4 but it has an auto. everything I have seen seems to only show an manual trans option. Was the auto even available, and if so, how many of them had an auto?

Thanks and sorry for jacking the thread.
Just bought a 2003 Fx4 with an automatic.

A 2003 with 98k on it is doing pretty darn good IMO. Mine has 233k on it, is just starting to get rear rocker panel rot, along with the center of the bed being completely rotted away. Anyone want to buy a 2003? :D

i tried searching here and all over the web for the 2003 Ford Ranger production numbers and cant really find anything solid. so far i have only seen a number of 517 trucks in 2003 with the Level II packge :icon_surprised: but that seems awfully low to me. I realize they were a bit pricey back when they were new (my window sticker is nearly 27K!) but I figured there would be at least a few thousand of them out there, not a few hundred. i went ahead and emailed Ford's customer research department with my VIN and i will wait to see what they say, but in the mean time, what do any of you guys know about this subject ??? :icon_cheers:
I know I had the same problem with my 2002 FX4. It has a manual transmission and manual transfer case. Best info I got from Ford is that only 1096 were recaled to replace complete rear differential. So 517 might be quite accurate for 2003 Level II.

31 spline 8.8" with a torsen LSD is the biggest change on the level II's.
Also had heavier rear differential bearings, rear springs(3600 lbs) and rear axle (1.626 inch compared to 1.21 inch). Additionally had heavier front axle/springs (2900 lbs).

Here's my Marti Report. Pretty similar (no surprise). Was really hoping to find out how many came with the manual T-case
