I found a 2002 explorer sport trac with a decent body (according to pics)
Has low miles (145k) and the guy is asking $1500 obo and I have to drive 100 miles for it...
Has no rust and a factory rebuilt transmission that won’t go into gear.

What do you think?

Look at what similar Sport Trac's are going for with running engine and trans

Worse case is $2,000, approx. for a transmission, obviously the "rebuild" was not warrantied or past warranty, so not that recent
2002 will have the 4.0l SOHC engine so could have timing chain issue, listen closely and plan on swapping out tensioners
2WD or 4x4?

If it has no Drive or Reverse, but does move in 1st/2nd, then its the one-way sprang/clutch so needs full rebuild for sure

My credo
"220, 221, whatever it takes."
Trannys are weak spots on these. The engine and timing chains could be okay IF the oil was changed regularly but you probably don't have a way to know that for sure. It's a good price if the body is solid, check the rockers, door bottoms, rad support, and rear cab corners. Then allow $2k for the tranny rebuild.

I agree. Consider the price 3,500... Which if all other things check out is not a bad price IMO.

I appreciate the advice and opinions ... the guy ended up deciding he was going to keep it only AFTER I was already 2 hours into a 3 and a half hour trip!
I did end up getting a totaled 2005 sport trac! Got it at auction so the pic (screen shot) is from their site.

This is what I ended up getting! Not as good I know but I am stoked!
Seats for my wife’s truck with butt heaters, an engine for my fx4 level 2, and tires for my fx4.

When I read that the trannys in these were a week spot I’m glad mine was a manual.

You’re lucky that’s for sure. Those are super rare with a manual transmission.

Yeah, mine was 2wd too. I found it online a year or so ago, it ended up in Florida and got totaled by a side swipe. Easily rebuildable but after my dogs and kids the interior was gross before I traded it.
