2002 SOHC smokes after warm up.

Hello, new to TRS forums. I have a 2002 SOHC 4.0l that smokes after it warms up and wondering what it could be. It seems to me that if the rings were bad it would smoke all the time, cold or warm? I put a used engine in the truck while waiting to rebuild the original engine. The donor truck didn't have an EGR system so I swapped the intakes out from the original. Could oil be getting in through the PCV or somewhere else? Or is the engine just wore out? I heard it run before I bought it and it didn't smoke. Any tips would be appreciated.

Blue, smells like burnt oil. It goes from no smoke to a lot of smoke pretty quick. Thanks

Probably rings. Could be a bad PCV. If its just a "get me by" engine untill you get the other one ready to rock id just run it.

Blue smoke is oil
Grey is fuel
White is coolant

The blue smoke will foul O2s and Cat converters, so minimal use is best
Yes, rings or Valve guide seals
Valve guide seals are more likely because of the delay in the smoking, when engine sits the oil in the upper engine/valve covers drains back down to oil pan
On start up new oil is pumped up to the rockers/valves and starts to get sucked in thru the leaking intake valve seals, so a few minute delay

Just pull out the PCV valve and have a look, if its fouled with oil then install a "Catch Can" its not hard to do
And this would point to rings being the issue, excessive Blow-By


And synthetic oil will smoke less than regular oil, but its expensive

Out of curiosity, how many miles on the truck/engine?

Hi, thanks for the info. I was afraid that would be the problem. The guy I bought the engine from said it had about 70k on it but I was suspicious. It has an average of 160lbs. of compression (that's the first thing I checked) but a couple of fuel injectors were clogged with gunk so I started to lean towards the PCV valve but that was just wishful thinking. I wont be running it like this for sure. Its a second ride for me so I think I will step up the plans to rebuild the original engine. I only paid $350 for the engine that's in it now and other than some fluids and a few gaskets, it didn't cost me too much. Buyer beware right. Thanks a lot for the help guys, I appreciate it very much. I'll post my project when I get a little further on it. It should be a nice little truck when I'm done. Take care.
