The tech page has an Oil Filter Upgrade section but an upgrade (bigger filter) for the 2.9L isn’t shown or discussed. Does anyone know of a bigger filter that will fit the 2.9L?

Deengineer until it is how Blue Oval should have sold it!!
If you don't mind using a remote oil filter adapter, you can use any size filter that you want. You can even mount it out if the way and where it gets some cooling.

Feel free to remind me, to take a some pics of mine, forward on the passenger side and getting airflow ..)

Just to be fair the stock FL1A was used even on 460s. It has plenty of capacity for a 2.9

If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
If you need a bigger filter it means you need to change the oil more often.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

FL1A for me, motorcraft only.

I've run some of the more exotic ones like the Bosch extended life... Not worth the extra scratch imo.

Bronco graveyard sells a magtech filter adapter. Apparently filters out iron fines. One is going on mine after rebuild just to catch magnetic break-in debris, but that's about it.

If you're looking for ways to extend your oil life, oil cooler helps greatly. But, they too can develop not fun issues.

Feed it a can of ceratec at next change. You'll think you gave it a can of whoop ass 200-800 miles later.

It's essentially just boron nitrate. No, there's nothing else out there comparable. It works it's way into friction surfaces and plates them with a thin coat of boron. Not a silver bullet for anything in particular, but does add a little protection. They claim 30,000 mile intervals. Not sure if it's true.

The other thing is that it's a flat tappet motor. The EPA regulated lower zddp additives a few years back. Lack of zddp does this to your camshaft:

I used some Motorcraft 10w30 diesel oil in a 429 I'm working on because it had a warning not to use it in a vehicle with a cat because of high potassium content, I think it will be OK because the engine is well broken in. Racing oil and ZDDP additives are cheaper than camshafts, not to mention the damage metal particles do when circulated through the engine.

Would diesel oils be a good alternative in a 2.8/2.9 cologne?

Maybe a Rotella T or Motorcraft Heavy Duty Diesel Oil?

Did very poorly in mine.

Complaints about the VR1 which was made for engines like this?

I’m really surprised that with all the research and “I’m stoned, let’s try this” ideas you have, you haven’t bought or pieced together a bypass oil filtration system.

No complaints about VR1, just don't know that I can source it locally. Guess I can order it online.
Advance Auto just started carrying it not too long ago. Might want to check with them, seem to be reasonably well priced as well. If nothing else, there's always Amazon 👍🏿👍🏿

So, no joke I saw that on the Explorer forums at one point. I did briefly consider it.

But I'm also a cheap ****, so when I saw the price of putting one of those systems together, no way.

Then again, I do know some really awesome guy that works in a commercial truck garage. And if he would want to piece together a system out of spare parts and ship it to me, I'd certainly run it with the massive Mercedes oil cooler that is going in front of the intercooler.

You could use a FL299 it's a longer version of the FL1A it was used on medium duty trucks with the 370, 429 and 7.0 engines

The FL1A is one of the biggest oil filters Ford used on gas engines, ever. How much upgrade do you need?
