2.9 to 4.0 swap. Which starter do I use?

Both engines are out. We put the ranger clutch and flywheel on the 4.0 but neither starter is matching up.

The ranger starter is too big and goes in crooked because it bumps up against the motor.
The explorer starter doesn't seem to match up with the ranger flywheel.

If it ain't broke, break it.
You need to use the 4.0 flywheel and clutch. Then the 4.0 starter should work.

Is it possible to make the 2.9 starter work with the 2.9 flywheel and clutch? The motor isn't in yet. We were seeing if it would fit by holding the starter up to it. Do you think we weren't holding it in the correct position or it really is just too big?

If we get the 4.0 flywheel and clutch, would we also need to get a new starter? The 4.0 starter we have is from an automatic.

Well crap. I didn't realize the 4.0 had an automatic. I really don't know about using the 2.9 clutch and flywheel. :dunno: The 4.0 clutch is better but then you do need the matching flywheel. I would think the starter would be the same for manual or auto. Hopefully someone who knows more about this than be can help you out.

If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
If you're swapping in a bigger engine do you really want to keep the small clutch?

I was reading this. I was confused about what they said about the starter. But they are not doing an engine swap. They are just putting the 4.0 clutch on a 2.9 engine so yes, they would buy a 4.0 starter.

I would prefer to use what I already have but if doesn't work, it doesn't work.
Also, this is my first large project like this and am running into things that I haven't got a clue about.
None of the forums and articles I have read about it have said anything about the starter.

You can use the 2.9 flywheel, clutch and starter on a 4.0 but it will not last long.

The 4.0 automatic starter won't work with a 4.0 manual flywheel.

I recommend buying a 4.0 flywheel, clutch and starter because you'll be back in there replacing the 2.9 clutch soon.

You have a problem here son.

You need to use a 4.0 clutch, as has been said. A 4.0 will smoke a 2.9 clutch without even trying.

Then you need the starter and blocking plate for a 4.0 with a manual transmission. the 2.9 flywheel and the flex plate for both engines are only about 8 1/3 inches. The flywheel for a 4.0 is 10. The starter sits in a different spot.
