None at all.
I am having head problems (sticking valves) on my '01 with 2.5L. I can't find another 2.5L engine or head anywhere. Will the later 93-97 2.3L head swap over to a 2.5L? Those are not hard to find. I'm told by the junkyard that the 2.3 has vastly different sensor locations to the 2.5. I have only messed with a few of the early 2.3 engines from the late 80s. I know they are somewhat different. Maybe my local JY is confusing the two.

The head will bolt in place and everything will bolt up to it. The only issue will be that the intake ports will not match your intake, but it will work.

Edit: On second thought, there is some difference in the EGR passages as well. I put a 2.3 intake on a 2.5 head and everything worked out but it has been a few years, I am not sure if it would work the other way around.

If you grabbed a '95-97 2.3L head you should be fine, they were almost identical

Do either of you guys know if the 2.3 can be rebuilt to a 2.5 specs and work in place of the 2.5?

On '95-97 2.3L's the only difference mechanically between a 2.3L and 2.5L are the crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons (probably rings too, but haven't checked part numbers). So if you get one and get both to a machine shop the crank and rods are probably fine, pistons might need to be bore matched but factory stuff is cheap

Thanks. I kind of thought it was either a bigger bore or longer stroke.

No problem.

Yeah, they did the bore difference thing in the '80's with the 2.0L, it had a smaller bore and smaller combustion chamber, to keep from going to Siamese bores (guessing) they opted for a longer stroke for the 2.5L

Yeah I remember the jump from 2.0 to 2.3. That was way back in my dirt track racing days in the 80's. Fark I feel old.

I'm not that old, but I've had some reality checks in the last few years, just realized the other day I've been driving for about 25 years now... Heck, my '00 Explorer seems like it should be "new" not 21 years old...
