Now that I'm among experts who clearly know their stuff, I was wondering what I had. Back in the early 90's I got my first Ranger. My dad swore it was one of the first 1000, #908 actually. Besides that I remember it having a 4 speed manuel shift trans. A 4 cylinder and a carburetor . My grandad brought it home from the JY and salvaged the title and rebuilt the truck. Drove the pics out of it and them my dad got it to, hence I got it. I was wondering what engine and transmission it had. I don't remember if I was 2.2 , 2.0, 2.3 ??? Was the 4speed standard equipment? Nobody else that had Rangers had a 4spd.

4-speed was standard, 5-speed optional.

Hard to say which engine you had, IIRC it could have been any of the three, but a 2.2 would have been a diesel.

#908 would have been 1983's VIN ending in A00908, so the VIN would give you that, if you still had it.

Know what other things it did and didn't have could help narrow the engine down. If it had no radio it was 100% a 2.0.

Pretty sure dad put the two knob, am/fm radio in it. It also didn't have ac. Had the little wing windows that helped with no ac, if your moving. wasn't diesel. Had constant "tick" that came back 25k miles after an engine rebuild. Had 85 on the speedo, never touched it.haha. and yeah, I recall him showing me the vin, but at the time I thought the ol' man was just trying to make it more interesting so I would have a reason to be excited about trading my Maverick for it.

2.0/2.3 were both available.

The 4speed was the only manual offered untill 84 IIRC. Woulda been a TK4 speed.

I believe the 2.0 was available in all trims but the 2.3 was only offered in things besides the base model.

More then likely it was a 2.0.

I wish I could find a set of those wing window doors now, WITH the flag style mirrors. I've been looking for quite some time, and they're rare to find. Most have the huge truck style mirrors.

I know what you mean. I had the little flag mirrors. Not those big ass ones that take up the whole door.

Fortunately replacement "flag" style mirrors for these trucks are easy to find and cheap, IF you're not cheap. lol

if "flag style" refers to the little itty, bitty mirrors, then I much prefer the big truck style ones on a truck. I had the little itty bitty mirrors on my '91. I had the big ones on the '85 and the '90. I wouldn't have wanted to try backing up the '91 with a topper on it with those mirrors. Fortunately it didn't have one, but the '90, with the big mirrors was much easier to back up.

you don't need the whole door, just all the glass, run channels, etc.

I thought about converting my doors to wing windows, but I figured working on 30+ year old window internals would end up going badly. Bushings, rollers, etc.. Then there's the issue of getting all of those parts, including large pieces of window glass shipped to me. Then, there's the bondo in my doors...

I need to find a clean set of doors first I suppose, but I'm still hoping to get lucky and find a set that are already set up the way I want, that are also clean enough to be salvaged.
