picked up another ranger (#4 now).
'88, single cab, 2.9, 4x4, fm146
has no exhaust behind the manifolds
my dad still has a dead not worth fixing '86, super cab, 2.9, 2wd, fm145

parts numbers tell me the y pipe and cat are different. is it just o2 sensor stuff, or can I swap them over? emissions is a non-issue.

I've been reading thru a few pages of people talking about pipes and having them built and not being able to find them. call me lazy but I think I'm better off asking those who know outright rather than trying to cross reference everything.
also his truck is in another state, and he's not in a physical state to 'check'

appreciative as always for any advice

Very well could be routing for the DS down pipe. 4wd has the front driveshaft to contend with.

I have no idea other than that though.

My credo
Deengineer until it is how Blue Oval should have sold it!!
vega,

The difference is the 86-87 had a true dual "H" pipe instead of the 2 into 1 "Y" pipe; the 86-87 also used a dual in/single out cat vs the 88's single in/single out.

The O² sensor is the same for both and in the same approximate location.

At least on rockauto there's no distinction between 2wd/4wd. Sensible consideration though.

Ah that explains the price difference too. Well, as long as I pulled both together, they both seem to go between the same intermediate pipe and manifolds, so aside from the rust factor, sounds like a worthwhile swap against the cost of new stuff

86 and 87 model year 2.9s had EGR. 88 and later years did not. To offset the loss of the NOx reduction from the EGR system being deleted Ford needed to use a more efficient cat. The shape of the Y-pipe and the flange to mate to the cat were changed to prevent an EGR cat from being used on a non-EGR system, which would upset the controls of the most toxic tailpipe emission.
