Hi, I need a 1st gear for the M5R1 trans from a 93 Ranger with 4.0L 4x4. It is hard to find one anywhere and was wondering if the 1st gear from a 4.0L B4000, part # P50417271E would be the same. I can not find any tech info on the gear if it is 31 or 32 tooth. This gear is readily available from Mazda but even the parts people at dealer can not find that out..

should be. the b4000 is a Ranger with a 4.0 and a Mazda badge on it. all of the mechanicals are identical. same engine, same transmission.

The m50d is a mazda transmission not a ford transmission so it would make sense for mazda to have the parts... :dunno:

Identical trans between the ranger and b series.

F3TZ7100A appears to be the Ford part number for first gear for a 4.0 M5OD.

Regardless of what you end up with, make sure it looks exactly like what you have now. Pay close attention to the synchronizer teeth. I have one M5OD core from a '97 4.0 Ranger that has synchro teeth cut differently than any other I have seen. It may simply be a trans newer than '97 and the teeth may actually be totally compatible with the older style but I don't know. It's weird.

Thanks, just looking for confirmation. If I order it I can not return it so do not need any more expensive paper weights. Found 2 places in the US but for $270 they can keep it, by the time I have it sent north of the border it will be over $400 CA. Mazda dealer 5 mins from work can sell it for $160CA.

Yes that is the Ford number. Odd, only gear change I know of is 5/Rev gears...36 vs 30 synchro teeth. There was early ones with 2 piece synchro ring on 2nd? gear

The 1-4 gears and countershaft are different between 2.3/2.9/3.0 trucks and 4.0 trucks as well. The 5th/rev issue is only relevant for really early (88-91?) M5ODs, they are all 30 tooth after that. But there are other changes too, it's irritating and hard to find the exact parts you need and cross references are scarce. Motive Gear's website was where I found my parts list.

ya, 1 tooth less on 4.0L. for gears 1-3, 4 is 1:1 on both and R is the same. I think there was a change in 2000 or 2001 but not sure what it was.

Found this after more searching:

M5OD-R1
  • 1988–2011 Ford Ranger (North America, all except 2.9L V6 before 1991)
  • 1988–1995 Ford Aerostar
  • 1991–2002 Ford Explorer
  • 1991–2003 Ford Explorer Sport
  • 2001–2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac
  • 1991-1994 Mazda Navajo
  • 1994-2009 Mazda B-series pickup (North America)
* 2001+ models w/ 4.0L SOHC V6 use an "HD" version of the R1 but shifter is no different
M5OD-R2
  • 1988–1996 Ford Bronco
  • 1988–2008 Ford F-150
  • 1988–1999 Ford F-250 (GVWR < 8500)
The HD has different gearing again and only used with SOHC 4.0L

Thanks for the help, looks like I will be ordering the Mazda gear.

Yes there are differences between years and engines but if you order the parts from the same year mazda with the same engine they will be the same. Mazda did nothing different mechanically to the B series vs the ranger, all the differences were cosmetic.

If you have a 93 ranger 4x4 manual 4.0 just tell the mazda parts dude that you have a 1993 B4000 4x4 manual, same truck. (y)

That is basically what I did. Part is not returnable so wanted to make sure the part was correct. There is virtually no information any where on Mazda part numbers, lots on Ford part numbers.
