1st gear at 60+ MPH?

Well some of us know what can happen but some of us dont and here is a guy that tried it and recorded the results on video.

Disclaimer: dont try this on your own. It is very dangerous and I'm not referring to parts breaking either.

Weird he didn't try 4th gear, the 1:1 direct drive, it may have worked if the counter shaft broke, but most likely the input shaft broke so wouldn't have mattered

I put a 700r4 into reverse while doing about 45. It didn't even hesitate to start turning the wheels backwards while the truck was still going forward. That transmission took another 60,000 miles of antics like that before being run over by a van.

I get it that he buys cheap to him vehicles , and stupidly destroys them for you tube views . But damn , that was a nice '94 Ranger .


But in case anybody thinks this was a good idea . I'll relate a story from back in the day with a friend .

Built 440 , 4sp Mopar . Power shifting from 3rd to 4th wound out . For whatever reason , passenger was either po'ed or excited ( don't recall at this remove ) , and smacked his arm while shifting . So instead of catching 4th , he hit 2nd @ substantially over 100mpg .

The clutch came through the ( stock) bellhousing, thru the floor hump , through the dash from below, and through the windshield . If either driver or passenger had been leaning the wrong way , they'd have been essentially sliced in two . If the clutch or pressure plate had " grenaded instead of acting like oversized frisbee , they'd both have been dead .

Needless to say , after that he was a believer in shatterproof bellhousings .

My understanding is that most vehicles with a 5-speed are geared so that in second gear, RPM=MPHx100. So at 100MPH, the engine would be turning over at 10,000RPM. I'd hazard a guess that the redline on that 440Mopar would be 5,000(ish), so he'd be double the redline.

Youre right on the redline, but that was a 4 speed not a 5 speed, so youre going from a 1:1 direct drive 4th down to a (assuming its an A833) 1.39 or so 2nd. Shouldnt of produced such dramatic results unless from the rpm alone....guessing it was the fact he was still into the power

Made me look it up . I don't recall if he had the wide ratio or close ratio , so would be either 1.93 , or 1.77 . And he would have been shifting at more like 6,000 than 5,000 ( far from stock engine ) .

Put about 800 lbs in the bed and try that crap....tires would have traction instead of just skidding and slowing the truck down.

When I was growing up we had a '80 F-100, 300 inline six with three on the tree. We could be going any speed and slam it into reverse and it would just roast the tires. I don't remember ever having to replace the transmission. Went through a few clutches though.
