I see that I have axle code 97.

Why would a 4X4 "Off Road" model have "non limited slip" or "Open" rear axle???

My credo
I sniff fuel for a living. Don't judge me!
That is a pretty common thing. The Ranger isn't the only vehicle model that comes from the factory like that. It helps keep the cost of the vehicle down for those who don't know any better. A good locker runs for around $600-$1,000 depending on the design.

My credo
Give me money.
Cause the person who bought it 21 years ago didn't feel like paying for that option?

My Super Duty 4x4 (non-FX4) has that issue. Someone put an open 3.73 under there. Makes it feel like the truck has no nuts at all.

Depending on the age and odometer of the truck, rather than $600-1k for a locker I'd grab a whole axle with locker from the junkyard in the $150 range. Swap fluid & brakes, bolt up, hit the road. The 4.10s are great on this truck.

Nope? It's a 4x4. Not the FX4 package, just an XLT 4x4.

Oh. I forgot to mention. The front actually locks. 3wd?

And you have to manually lock the hubs. Vac lock never worked.
