1999 Ranger Vehicle Speed Sensor

My Ranger detects vehicle speed using the rear ABS wheel speed sensor. [1998-2000 years only, I believe] The signal is processed in the main computer, adjusting for tire diameter. How is tire diameter detected? My question arises because my truck's speedo indicates about 5-6 mph slow. Previous owner put new tires on the rear 6 months and 2000 miles ago.

I believe tire size is programmed into the computer.

Finally got back to the forum ... earlier I inquired about calibrating my speedo in my 1999 2wd Ranger ... update: FORD dealer says I can't re-do it on the '99 ... it is fixed in the computer for the orig. rear tire size ... really? There must be a device that can re-calibrate, Ford or aftermarket. Does anyone have some info on this?

Try SCT...an X4 tuner, last I looked they were approx $400US, the tunes that are programmed onto the tuner are on top of the price of the device itself. They still have a program for the older Rangers.

At one time, you could buy a device (aftermarket) that you wired into the speed sensor output and would correct the speedometer. I had one on a '93 F150 and it did work.
