I did a search but could not find any info that was conclusive. I am getting ready to order 31 spline Moser axles for my 1999 8.8 housing. The problem is they only offer ready to order axles for 93-97 model year Rangers. My question is as follows.

Is there any specs that vary from the 1997 model year to the 1999 model year.
R or L side Length, bearing size, hub diameter, etc?

Moser's phone reps are awesome, and they have a lot more info than can be found in catalogs and on the internet.
Have you called them yet?

I did call them and they have the OE specs for 93-97 but nothing for the 98 or 99 models. My application is stock Ranger 8.8 except for the 31 spline traction lok.

If it's a stock rear end and not a Fx4 that came with the torsen, then it's the 28 spline. Where did the 31 spline come from. All the 28 splined ones back to 93-94 were all the same width per side.

The Ranger 8.8 in question came from a 1998 truck and had a 28 spline diff. The 31 spline 8.8 diff I am using came from another vehicle. It is not the FX4.

It would seem Jbrown1238 has taken the 31 spline differential from an Explorer or something (F150?) and put it in a Ranger housing and now needs custom shorter axles to mate the differential.

At least that's the way I read it. That makes the 31 spline a bolt in swap.

31 spline shafts won't fit in a ranger 8.8 due to the outer bearings being too small. That being said, the 93-11 ranger 8.8, except the fx4 packages, are the same to my knowledge...

First let me thank you for the reply. Just a couple questions as I am not sure I understand your reply correctly.

I should not need shorter Ranger axles just because it is a 31 spline diff, correct? If I am ordering Moser axles the factory specs would be the same except for the spline count, correct?

What 31 spline axles won't fit? I assume you are talking about existing axles from another application. What if I order custom 31 spline Moser axles built to 1997 Ranger specs. Is there any dimensions/specs that are different from 97-99? I do know that Ford has different part numbers for the 97 and 99. Thank you very much for the help and the response.

The physical dimensions are the same as far as shaft lengths. The 28 spline axle housing is physically smaller at the axle tube end vs the 31 spline end. I'm not sure if the 31 spline shaft will fit through the 28 spline bearing. If it will, then I'm sure moser can custom cut you the shafts you need...

I had posted before wanting to be sure of intentions but wasn't sure of several things. Looks like both carriers fit, wasn't sure.. Took forever to find the actual dimension over the 31 spline. According to Mark Williams (another axle maker) the max diameter of splines is 1.333" and the ID of bearing is 1.402. Got sidetracked, Google sent me to several other sites and boy is there a lot of bad info out there. Really sad that people rely on bad info. Looks like everything will fit, just never heard of anyone doing it this way, usually go right to the Explorer.

Thank you very much. I was running across a lot of bad info as well. I think I will be fine just didn't want to dump $300.00 only to find out I could not use the axles. I had a Ranger 8.8 rear and a 31 spline 8.8 diff left over from my 03 Cobra. I really wanted to use both since they were sitting right here.

I think what was confusing is that most people hear 31 spline axles and think "Explorer, big diameter". I would be using the smaller Ranger diameter shaft with 31 splines custom made to order.

I have 31 spline Moser axles in my '94 Ranger's 8.8", so yes, it's very possible to do.

Looking back though, I'd probably just use an Explorer axle if I was to do it over again, as this way you get a higher GAWR since the axle bearings are bigger, and can source a set of junkyard axle shafts if ever needed.

As for the differences from a '94 to a '99 axle, I'm not aware of any other than possibly the brake drum pilot diameter, but I can't say for sure on that one either. Length & axle bearing size I do know are the same.
