I need a backing plate for a 1998 4x4 Ranger XL. When I look up the part by appllication I get a number BUT when I order the number and am asked for a VIN number a notice tells me it will not fit my truck. Any body know why or if the application number will work?1FTZR15U1WPB46793

Do you if it is the original rear end and drums?

There are both 9 and 10 inch brakes... maybe the VIN leads to a 9 inch brake system.

And have you measured the drums?

All original. I have owned the truck since 10,000 miles. I have measured the drum and in fact, the passenger side is back together. I think you may be correct that the vin leads to a wrong size. I may have to gamble $70 . Without vin code confirmation the part cannot be returned.

I wouldn't put the VIN in. According to a lot of sites, the factory tire size for my 2011 is 16" wheels. I bought the truck off the dealer lot with 15" wheels. The one sitting right next to it had the same wheels.

We tried that. The center hole is too large and the bolt pattern is different too.
