Sent the truck to a custom shop in 2022. First time dealing with a shop like this. Didn't know what to expect. Communication was terrible. Ended up having the truck in the shop for about a year and a half. Seemed like they kept drawing it out and the bill kept getting bigger and bigger. Finally had to just pull it out of the shop and try to finish job on my own. By that time, they had the engine running, but wiring harness was incomplete along with a few other things like brakes, drive shafts, exhaust, cooling, etc. Brought home and started working on it with plans of turning into an overlanding rig for the wife and I. Finished brakes (still needs e-brake linkage), and exhaust. Swapped front clip with later model because it looks beefier. Started on cooling system. Got radiator hooked up and was in the process of wiring in an e-fan when we had our first kid. Needless to say, a two seater project truck moved to the bottom of my priority list and has now sat in the driveway untouched for about a year. And now I have to move next summer. Hoping to get this thing sold before then. Needs someone with the tools and the time to put into it.
I posted the pics of the invoices from the shop along with pics of the truck. Below is a link to a video of the engine running when I first brought it home. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/vDzPSvLouL0
I’ll post a picture of the receipt for the axles as soon as possible. They were built by Woody’s 4x4. I paid about $14k for the axles plus another $20k in shop fees and parts.
Asking $25k OBO (price is for parts highlighted on the invoices, plus the axles).
Will need trailered. Needs new fuel pump to get it started again along with the other stuff to make it road worthy. Or you can just turn it into a trail rig. Buyer will get truck plus all spare parts.

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
whew...that is a tough spot .....20,000.

bummer.

generally cost of vehicle modification for non collector utility vehicles is a 100 percent loss at some point.

there are issues with the swap.

while there are many ways to do this successfully.... the way they chose to modify the firewall and k member to install that particular engine in this particular chassis is a shame.

25 k buys an old ultra 4 car with a ruthless powertrain if one wants a trail rig, let alone something with a stockish jeep axle. and often times thats with a trailer.... and 100k in receipts..

those axles swapped into your rig.... in today's market are zero value because they sell more superduties then anything and a set of superduty axles can be less then 300 bux at a pick n pull.

so keeping it or using it to modify an explorer to retain your original goals instead of selling it for 5 to 8 k seems something to consider.

i really think your losses will probably be best served that way.

i get asked regularly to assess these things, and would never advise this purchase for more then 5k. it is definitely worth 5k if that is a rubi 44 and it runs flawlessly.

sad to say and i feel bad about it but thats the deal. old school rangers generally get modified by the owner directly because there is no way to justify paying to have it done.

today ... in the rapid prototype printer market and having a world platform....they are just like jeeps and tototas. bought not built is cost effective...

not for me ... but for normal people.

i am thinking about building a new truck. cant buy what i need...have to make it.

and i know if i buy a new ranger and do what will be required to make the truck usable for my needs...it will be a OVER a 100 percent loss of modification costs day one.

my best bet is to buy a jeep gladiator. the closest gladiator to fit my goals still requires a custom bed...which if purchased is 5 k....and they quit making the diesel.. but it starts at 75 k to buy the truck and goes from there. i

to build the new ranger....MYSELF....to my goals and needs will be close to 40k in materials. and probably 10 to 20 days of labor tuning and building. just to get where i need it to work.

labor would likely be at least 20k to farm it out...if i can find someone willing to cut a new truck in half.....making it a 110k ranger.

zero warranty.

zero ability to take it to a shop for repair assistance in the field in an emergency.

same problem you have.

10 years ago that wasnt a problem for me

today ....i have way less tomorrows then yesterday's....so running a stock 250 or 2500 is better use of my earning days.
those can be had for 58k. brand new. full warranty.

and the ranger i looked at was 57k. how the hell is this a real thing ....75 k for a rubicon gladiator and 57 k for a mac ranger..... 58 k for a Godzilla 250 crew. WTF.

yet... i still might do such a thing. because selling it is not a thing.

its alot to think about.

you never know might get 20 for it.

I appreciate your feedback. I knew before posting that it was a long shot but I figured I’d put some feelers out just incase somebody was bored and had money to throw around. I posted it on FB too and just ended up with a bunch of smartass comments. Taking your advice I decided to pull the listing from facebook. I plan to pull the axles to put on the jeep. I will re-install the old rear axle on the ranger and since the front is built out for a dana 30 I will swap mine from the jeep to the ranger. Once the swap is complete I plan to re-post the ranger for a much more palatable price. Hopefully it works out. Thanks again for the input.

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
These are always difficult conversations because most of us do this as a labor of love. I do all my own work because I'm too broke to do otherwise. What's my truck worth to me? $1million. What's it worth to anyone else? $1000 if I'm lucky.

Wow. Sorry to hear your build ended up like this. $14,000 will buy you a pair of brand new Currie D60's with all the good stuff... or a really good start on a couple of Spidertrax axles... wow.

I think builders play a big part in situations like this and they need to tell people that their rig will be in the shop long term and to expect big expenses. A lot of them don't do that and they deserve the reputation that they get because of builds like this. I know of two local shops that burned people in the same way... one other that does exceptionally good work and no BS though, they're not all bad!

I am sure I have at least 20k into my crawler and will never get that back out of it. If I had to sell it, I'd probably swap the RCVs out for stock shafts and try for 10k - as the years go by and I continue having fun with it, the loss wouldn't bother me as bad.

I've always felt that this isn't a hobby someone should get into unless they can do the work themselves, or are willing to learn. Most of us here learn as we go. Labor is crazy expensive and you'll end up spending more money than buying a new truck.

If this was mine, I'd be tempted to find an extended cab with a good cab, bed, and frame for cheap, swap everything onto that, keep it, and build memories with the family with it.

My technique……..I don’t keep receipts and keep writing checks.

It‘s painful.
