I have a 93 F150 with a 300 straight six that blew a head gasket. Is it an aluminum head? where can I get a good price on a gasket set? Is there a good place online to buy OEM parts for this truck. Thanks in advance.

the 300-6 is an old-school all cast iron design...head and block.

any local parts store can get you a head set for it.

Just make sure you find the cause of the failure before putting it back together.

the 300 was introduced in '65..and little was changed between its introduction and its death in '96. its a notorious roach (impossible to kill), and will out torque any small block.

What do you mean by out torque? The 300s best showing was 265ft# in the EFI version. The carb ones run from around 200ft# to 250ft#. No self respecting 302/5.0 would be caught dead in a ditch with those numbers.

the 5.0 makes 20ft-lbs or so more than the 6, but the 300 makes its peak torque 1,300RPM lower than the v-8. the 300 has grunt down into deisel engine territory...THATS what i meant by out-torque.

Thanks for the help guys. I found the problem. I let my wife drive the truck to work the last 2 weeks and she ( like any woman) doesnt watch the gauges. The thermostat went bad and was stuck shut. It overheated enough to pop the gasket. So far that is All I found wrong. i just didnt want to go buy a new head for this thing after I just had it painted.

Thanks Guys

Chances are you didnt hurt anything else.

The 300 is impossible to actually kill. They either wear out or get tottalled. Normally the 300's you see in the junkyard are ones that have outlasted the rest of the truck by such a large margin that the owner couldnt see the point in keeping it any more.

There was only a 10ftlb differnece between a 300 and a 302 in 96, 265@2000 for the 300, and 275@3200 for the 302. At 2000RPM the 302 might be making 200ftlbs.

ONce you get them revving though the 300 runs outta steam at like 3300 and the 302 pulls hard till 4500.

The 351 is the best though, offering more power across the board and compareable low end to the 300.

later,
Dustin
