A while back my 2.9 L began starting very rough, but idling smoothly. Then, began loosing power but would occasionally punch through the low power. Now, rough start and continuous low power. Thought maybe ERG, but don't think I have one of those. Perhaps a sensor? I would report any codes, but not sure can find my scan port unless my pic shows it.

The EEC-IV test port should be further back on the drivers side fender as I recall. Is the check engine light on (and if not, does it work)?

Ahh, found it laying on passenger side wheel well. Yes, have had engine light and ABS lights come on and then turn back off. Hopefully can scan codes but it is an odd shaped plug.

Welcome to TRS :)

Good page to bookmark here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/index.shtml

Here is the page from there about getting codes on 1994 and earlier Rangers/B2s: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/OBD_I.shtml

Here is a list of the 2-digit codes used in 1990 models: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/OBD_I.shtml

Your symptoms read like fuel flow/pressure issue, change fuel filter if its older than 5 years
Cycle your key on and off 3 times, slowly, before trying to start the engine, that "Primes" the fuel system 3 times which will raise up fuel pressure if it was lost when engine was off
See if it starts up better
If it is a fuel issue then loss of power would be another symptom

There is a test port on the engine to test Fuel Pressure, expected is 30-35psi running, at any RPM
And should hold above 15psi with key off, for MONTHS

Clogged exhaust can cause loss of power, but usually not rough start
You can test for that with Vacuum gauge on the engine

Thanks, read codes 15 and 16. Not sure this helps me any.

15
(O) No Keep Alive Memory power to PCM pin 1 or bad PCM (Memory Test Failure)
(M) KAM (pin 1) was interrupted (was battery disconnected ?)
16
1.9L & 2.5L - Throttle stop set too high - IDLE or Idle Set Procedures
2.3L - RPM's too low - IDLE
(O) Electronic ignition - IDM circuit fault - Ignition Systems

Silly question, what kind of gauge fits the fuel pressure valve on the rail? Looks like tire gauge, but it doesn't fit.

It's the same fitting as a tire, yes (schrader valve).

You can rent a fuel pressure gauge from any chain auto parts store, and they should have one one the shelf to buy if you want one long term.
