1989 2.9 ranger: journey to passing inspection

those rims were common as could be in the late 80’s/early 90’s and are scarce now. too bad they are 14’s. if you could, build a matching ranger trailer & those rims could go on it. that bed is in excellent shape, too bad the rest of the truck wasn’t saveable.

We've got the truck all cut apart now, we couldn't use any of the front, it was crushed, so it's going for scrap, we hacked the frame off just behind the rear cab mounts, since it might be useable for patchwork. We pulled the engine and trans, I can pull apart the engine to see if there's any parts that could be sold. One of the rims is bent in the back, but if someone wants or sees a use for the set then we could talk about it.

Been a while since I've posted on here but I figured I'd give an update for anyone still following, we spliced the frame from the donor truck and everything has gone smoothly so far, now it's just a thing of painting the frame then putting it all back together.

Good progress! I lost my father just before I was old enough to do projects like this with him, unfortunately. Enjoy the time and the learning experiences your sharing with him.

I would HIGHLY recommend putting a fishplate on the inside and/or outside of the frame, just a butt weld like that is way too much stress concentration in a very important area.

In case you aren't familiar with a fish plate, it would be a <> shaped plate at the seam to get welds going in different directions.

We cut the back half so that it slid into the original frame, then ran bolts through as well as welding it, so it isn't just butt welded together, I do see what you mean tho and we thought about that before welding. I'll see if I can get some pictures of it here in a minute.

The welds aren't perfect but with how secure everything is we had 3 guys standing on the joints and didn't hear or see anything that would raise any red flags.

I know what you mean. Pull on one cable that is not even mounted and when it stops and gets tight it starts pulling on the other cable. Someone was paid a big engineering salary to come up with that one.
