My credo
Give 'yer balls a tug. Fight me.
Not seeing anything suggesting performance modifications yet.

It would be worth it to pop off the six bolts on your upper to see if its even ported.

If not, unlikely that its modified. Which would be typical 80s, all that work and zero enhanced performance.

Haha yeah very 80’s, all flash and no bang 🤣
Once out and I have some dedicated time I’ll break it down further and of course post the pics.

Dawsonville is a nice area. Not very close to where I am, but a lot closer than you were I suppose. Been a while since I made it to that part of the state, I need to plan a long weekend trip once the weather starts cooling back off.

Looks like pretty standard 2.9L stuff from here, but I'm more fimiliar with the 2.8L. Might be something special in the valve sizes or porting, but wouldn't know from that view.
Yeah it was definitely gorgeous country up there.
I grew up with an 85 std cab long bed 2wd with the 2.8. Never any real problems with it other than the ignition module went out a few times. Took forever to diagnose as it would run fine cold until it hit NOT. Then dead in the water until it would cool off enough to run in open loop. Brother and I abused that thing for years... and it never quit. Ran fine until I got rid of it in 2000 out in VA Beach... Sometimes I wonder what happened to it. Was in decent shape and zero rust as an original CA truck 🤔

@Franken5liter I would suggest ordering a Marti Report for your truck to learn more about it. Seems like it was originally ordered as an STX being that it has the high rider package AND 4.10 gears that came standard in automatic STXs, yet as part of the custom work they added the chrome XLT bits to it?
