The trans mission went out on my '88 4x4 and I picked up a '92 5 speed 2x4 transmission. My question is, will I be able to put my tcase onto the 2wd trans or do I have to swap the guts so I have the 92 trans in the 88 casing? Or did I drive 140 miles and waste $150 for being a dumbass and not checking first.

New trans
140k orig miles, new bushings, shifts like butter, spins easily in neutral, still has cleanish oil in it.

Thanks for the input.

You will not be able to bolt your t case to it directly, you will need to swap tail shafts which I am pretty sure you will need to take the transmission apart.

Most likely your '88 has a FM146. The '92 probably has a M5OD.

So, This......

Or did I drive 140 miles and waste $150 for being a dumbass and not checking first.

My buddy told me that I have an m5od in my 88. And can I just split the transmission behind the gears and swap the back ends so I have a 92 front and an 88 rear that bolts up to my tcase?

'88 w/ a 2.9l wouldnt come stock with a M5OD.

No, you cant. You have to tear down both transmissions and swap the output shafts.

This is confusing. What trans would have came with a 92 2.9l? And also, the shift fork for 3/4 broke so and it's stuck in 3 so that's why I bought this one.

Both transmissions are out of 2.9l rangers. If I swap the tail shafts, how would I bolt my tcase up to it? And is it not at all possible to swap the internals or anything so I can make it work? Or should I sell it and try and get the right one this time? I'm trapped for money right now and want the truck back so I'd like to do it the cheapest (but smart and safely at the same time) way possible so I don't look like a full blown retard to my family, and that I can prove them wrong for me buying one that I can't use.

Thanks.

Look under your truck and see if you have the same trans.... If its the same (other then 2wd/4wd problem) you can swap the tailshaft and extension housing into the 2wd trans. Its not the easiest thing to do, but it can be done.

1994fordranger and I almost got the old one out tonight. Ran out of light mostly. I can't get the shifters out so we're going to mess with it this weekend hopefully and try and get it out. We're having issues with clearing the axle support without taking the shifters out. But it's almost out.

So, if that isn't the easiest way, what is? And that's encouraging seeing as though I want to (end up with, if possible) a 5.8L and Dana something that will still make it street legal and 35" tires. Otherwise ill stick to a 5.0 or a 4.0.
