Hello, my dad and I just bought a 1986 Ranger 2.9 manaul with 4wd. Someone before use removed and capped EGR valve from manifold and intake. We got it running pretty good but we need a 1988 ECU to get the fuel ratio correct. Would you reccomend using a aftermarket ECU or going with OEM ECU? Also can anyone tell me what the correct OEM ECU part number that i need to look for the 5 speed 2.9? Thanks

Thanks! There is a difference in ECU p/n's between manual 5 speed and auto. Also, is'nt it not the P/N thats important I think but a different code printed on ECU for the software load. Anyone have anymore info on this?

You should be fine as long as its a 88-92 5sp with federal emission. I dont know the part number difference between auto and manual but wherever you buy from should describe it as "auto" or "manual".

I dont *think* the software number really matters a whole lot on these older trucks because the ECM basically just runs the engine.

If you go to rockuto.com and look up a 1988 Ford Ranger and pick a 2.9 v6, and then search for engine computer, their listings have all the factory numbers. Check the other years also and write their numbers down.

1988 2.9 manual no egr. E8TF-12A650-P1A. 89-92 are the same. Probably can an locate the Cardone part number in my other Grandsons if you can't cross it over. Haven't had any problems with the Cardone since I switched it to manual.
