well, i no longer own a Ranger, which sucks... wifey and i needed a vehicle that was a little more fuel efficient... so we traded the ranger in for a 2007 Ford Fusion SEL... but i still wanted a project car... So, Lacy went and picked this up for me:

:yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:

it's a 1969 VW Beetle... currently, it's not running, but less than $200 will solve that problem... it's got a 1600cc dual-port engine with less than 1000 miles on it... new carb, new generator and regulator... problem is, it's been sitting for about 3 years... a fresh battery and a good tune up, and she should be running just fine! once i get home from Afghanistan, i'll get more pics and document the work i'm doing to her... btw, her name is Blue...

I wish cars from back then were in that good of condition up here. You can't go back more then 4 years and expect rust free around here.

You said it, I have seen 1 and 2 year old vehicles here with undercarriage rust. Stupid rock salt! Why can people learn to drive on snow? :icon_rofl:

Nice bug! My dad had a 72 Beetle when he was in the USMC :headbang: Drove it from PA to California and had to rebuild the engine before driving home. I have seen pictures and it was a pretty sweet little car! Best of luck on deployment! :icon_cheers:

i bet the points are burnt out lol. or the carb is all gumed up.

i just got a 64 bug going and fixed the heater... i hope you don't live in a cold climate cause the heater is absolute crap.

the best thing you can do once you get that bug going is to either retrofit the fuse box to use blade fuses or to remove all the fuses and sand the contacts clean

Railman: might take you up on that offer!

Koda: thankfully it doesn't snow too much in TN, and it doesn't get truly cold... i was stationed up at Fort Drum, in Northern NY... -30* not counting wind chill... there is some rust spots in typical places on this car, but overall, she's pretty straight...

whizkid: that's totally cool, and luckily, rebuilding the motor is an afternoon project on one of these cars, and something i can do myself, even with my basic tool set...

BRUTUS: thanks for the advice... i am not quite sure what kind of condition the electrical system is in. i am expecting to have to do some upgrades to the electrical in order to support a stereo system. that's one thing i've gotta have is a sick stereo! and as far as the heater goes, i'm not too worried about it, hopefully gas prices will drop by winter time, and the bug will end up being my summer car, and i'll drive the F150 of the Fusion during the winter...

I have heard a lot of people try, but I have never heard of anyone truely "fix" the heating system on their VW.

Bro has a '68 with a 1600DP, back when it was in good health it would get about 40mpg. It probably still would but oil runs out the cylinder to block gaskets.

He put electric blower motors in the ducts under the rear seat which helped quite a bit, but the ductwork going to the defroster is plugged with what appears to be course steel wool (rather hard to get out)
