Hey guys, ive got a problem and need your help!

So I have a 1965 mustang coupe. I am trying to identify the factory options it had to see if the a/c, pony interior, etc. is factory or not. So I take a look at the ID tag on the drivers door, and its painted over. The whole tag is painted black. Great.
So im wondering if anyone can tell me how to remove the paint without removing the info below it. Does anyone know if the numbers on there are stamped or just printed?
Please help, and thanks!

Other than the driveline and interior code and color, I don't think the ID tag will tell you much else in the way of options. Also, on a car that old how sure are you that it is the original door?
I'd suggest gently rubbing it with acetone or Goo-Gone.

Well the plate has info on int options, axle, original engine, manufacture date, assembly plant info. Just stuff id like to get. Plus i just dont want it painted black in there. Do you think acetone would take of the printing?

There should be a "buck" tag on the fender, maybe the inner fender that will have more on it than the door decal will have. The door plate really doesn't go into much detail on the interior options other than the colors. Will not tell you options like AC, radio or even buckets seats vs a bench. I've got the data code info on a '66' I could scan in and send you if needed.

Been looking some more on that info. Really the best place to find that info is at http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forums/classic-tech/
There is a woman there by the name of Veronica who is the "Goddess" when it comes to the classic Mustangs. If your going to be working on an early Mustang, that's the place to be. How she know all this stuff is unreal. She know stuff that's not even in the books.
Go and join up for the best info.

The data plate will give the following information:

Model Year
Assembly Plant
Body Code
Engine Code
Consecutive Unit Number

(These first five things are contained in the car's VIN number)

Body Code (More specific information, e.g. coupe with standard interior vs. "pony" interior or bench seat.)
Exterior Color
Interior Color
Production Date
District Sales Office
Rear Axle Ratio
Transmission

The plates are stamped metal through the 1969 model year, so you can make an etching with a crayon or pencil that will reveal the codes even if the plate is painted over.

Buck tags indicate specific options but were not used on all Mustangs until later on. For example, in '66, I believe only cars built at Metuchen (NJ) had them; Dearborn (MI) and San Jose (CA) cars did not.

As stated above, Marti reports aren't available until the '67 model year.

I had lunch with a bud of mine yesterday, who owns a bunch of old Fords including two 60's Mustangs, and mentioned this to him. He said that very often on old Mustangs you will find the build sheet under the rear seat cushion squashed between the foam and the springs. Assuming it's likely this car has the original interior, it's worth a shot.

No offence to him but she is better. Has built up her own data base using the VIN's for Mustangs not covered in the Marti Report.
