I have one of these mounted on a 1960 Glassmagic 15ft "Siren" boat.

The lower unit got water intrusion (assuming since the oil is milky) and i wanna tear it apart and fix what needs fixed. Since the boat is nice, and that ol evinrude is a runnin SOB.

Either way, how complicated is the lower unit on these? I watched a youtube video and it seemed pretty simple. I dont wanna repower it due to other 75-80hp USED engines going in the 900-1000dollar range, and no local boat shop will touch it.

Am i opening a can of worms or should it be a pretty straightforward deal?

I'd make sure you can still get the seals and other parts before you do anything. I've never dealt with anything that old but I've rebuilt the lower units on both my 86 evinrudes and they were not at all difficult.

I already checked on parts, most stuff seems to be pretty readily available as it seems evinrude ran basically the same lower unit from 59/60 clear up till like 77.

Expect to replace gears. Take your time and be gentle because the housings are not incredibly strong. Easy to strip or crack the housing if you go gorilla on it. Other than that... it's just like a tiny little differential with a water and oil pump in it.

I see tons of them on shows in south America but only seen one once in my life in person. It was a small motorcycle engine. I guess the big selling point is, they are cheap to put together with whatever is laying around. Especially great in third world countries. But here if you want swamp power you go jet drive or fan.

Harbor freight motor, couple sizes of steel pipe, some hose, square stock, and a propeller... No vintage parts needed

Bearings for your Evinrude will be harder to find but probably also need to be replaced. West Marine has a marine RTV that works pretty well where gaskets can't be found. A Craigslist parts motor could be a good idea. Don't forget to swap your points & condenser while you have the cowl off even if they're good. Those old 2 smokes still have years of good times on the water left in them
