Finally got 600km on the truck and filled it up.
Averaged 27mpg (US) which is not bad considering my heavy right foot.
Most of this was city driving.
I'm sure if it had a standard trans and a lower (numerically) axle ratio that could come up quite a bit.

Thanks for sticking with making the auto work, and the mileage update!

For comparison, my '03 FX4 Level II, auto, 31" Firestone Destination A/T, would probably see about 14 mpg, if that, with harder city right foot driving.

I'm not hoping for a major engine issue anytime soon (just hit 214,000 mi!), but, these TDI swaps offer tantalizing mpg!

I'd be interested to know what sort of fuel economy you get on the highway. So far my 4.0 is being good, so I'm postponing thoughts of a TDI swap.

I recently drove from Calgary to Sooke. Did 600km on a full tank from Calgary to Kamloops. Overall did 10.9L/100Km or 26 MPG, which is pretty good for a 200,000Km+ truck with 4.0L/5 speed/4.10 gears. I wasn't gentle to it either, did ~130Km/h on the Coquahaula**.

Sold the Ranger last week so I wont be able to get any more info out of it.
My Jeep should be about the same weight as the Ranger and hope to have it running in the next few weeks. http://www.cherokeeforum.com/f46/2000-tdi-blacky-205238/
It's our new family vehicle so I will be able to get lots of long term data from it.
Our last family Jeep was a 93 Grand Cherokee with a 2.8L Isuzu and its still on the road 12 years after being converted to diesel.

I think its important when we are quoting MPG to also quote which measurement its in.
Your 10.9L/100km = 26MPG (Imperial) or 21MPG (US).
Not trying to be picky but we should be sure we are comparing apples to apples. :>)

I only calculated L/100Km. This is where I got the MPG number.

are you going to be making adapters for the 4.0 ranger? I'm interested in the swap but want to use a 4.0 trans for better clutch and strength.:icon_hornsup:

Yes, we are doing a run of 8 adapters at the moment and 1 of them is a 4L.
It will use the 3L flywheel since the 4L crank pattern is not well suited to the TDI crank spacer.

Just an update, we now build a 4L adapter that uses a 4L flywheel.

That kinda defeats the purpose of running a 4.0 trans. 4

Not quite, sure you don't get a stronger clutch but the 4L trans 1st and 2nd are a bit better suited to the diesel. I do agree it isn't ideal though.

i hadn't thought about the gearing difference in the trans. :icon_rofl: so i can see a it being used what is the exact issue with using the 4.0 flywheel? if i figured out a way to use it would the starter still work or set that a 3.0 flywheel

The bolt pattern on the 4L is not compatible with our TDI hub adapter design.

Here is some info that should be interesting.
Most TDI setups are going to have about 190-225ft/lbs of torque with bigger exhaust and a stage 1 tune.
This is what most people are doing for improved fuel economy.
The stock 3L clutch is good for about 230ft/lbs so it will work for most people.
If you put a bunch of money into a bigger turbo and stage 4 tune you can get into the 280 - 300 ft/lbs which a good street clutch from Southbend will handle no problem.
Their 3L street clutch is good for 325ft/lbs.
They also have a 3L clutch that is good for 400ft/lbs so bring it on :D

I've looked into clutches for the 3.0 since asking these questions and there are multiple performance 9.25 clutch kit for the 3.0. When I had my ranger in 2004 there was only stock availability for clutches that i could find but the Internet has come a long way since then in ease of finding things.

Where did you locate the starter on the adapter? You didn't use the stock 3.0 location did you?

No room in the stock location so we moved over to the passenger side.
