05 4.0 serpentine belt squeal

GF's vehicle. Said the belt had been "chirping" for a couple weeks. Looked under the hood and the face of the alternator had gobs of black belt dust on it. Had her start it and the belt was squealing. Only ran a few seconds and shut it off. Alternator pulley was HOT. Simple enough, alternator took a poop. Replaced it with a new one, and also replaced the tensioner, idler, and belt. Fired it up and same thing, belt sqealed for a second then a steady chirp.

Any ideas?

one of the other pulleys, or its unrelated just coincidence, which would be you cam synchro (if you have one). Mine chirps like a belt squeak, not all the time, but steady when it does.

Residue on the crank , water pump, power steering ect ect. Clean em off with brake parts cleaner. Maybe some belt dressing on the new

Thanks for the replies. It started squealing again so I will tear into it this weekend and see what's going on. When I worked on it before I ran it with the belt off to make sure the noise wasn't internal.

Just curious, what brand belt did you use? I have had brand new belts squeal on me (not specifically on the Ranger), and replacing the belt actually solved the problem.

Clean all the pulleys with a wire brush. It only takes a little bit of crap from the old belt to make a new belt chirp.

If the logical solutions suggested above work don't work, spray it with WD-40.

Check the Harmonic Balancer. I, unfortunately, replaced all the pulleys and the belt but still had a chirp. I had someone else look at it and he pointed out how the Harmonic Balancer was not inline with all the other pulleys. It was coming apart and sliding out. Replaced it and no more chirp.

Had time to look at it this morning. When she parked it the other night it was squealing almost non stop. Took the belt off this morning and it had definitely been slipping on the alternator. There was belt residue built up in the same areas as when this all started. Only thing I can see is the damper pulley has a rubber coating and the belt was stuck in it. I had to peel the belt off.

Just for grins I put the original Ford belt back on that was on it when the issue started. It is perfectly quiet now. Took it out and drove it around long enough to get it good and warmed up, still quiet.

I am guessing it is damper time, it looks like the pulley is cast into the damper itself.

Update time. I feel dumb. When looking at the damper I was confused by it having a belt pulley inside the one the belt was riding on. The one driving the belt seemed to have a rubber surface.

Fast forward a few days after driving it to work. It died and wouldn't restart. Got it home and scanned it. Crank sensor. Pulled the sensor off and it had a gouge machined out of the top. After really looking things over..............the inner pulley was actually the outer ring of the damper. It had slipped to the inside and not tossed the belt. Talked to a buddy who worked for Ford for many years. He'd seen it before once. I have never seen one move without throwing the belt of disintegrating.

New damper going on today. Hopefully all the issues will be solved now.

Looking forward to your update. My friend is looking at this Ranger with belt squeal issue. The owner replaced the belt but the squeal came back after about two weeks. We'll take a closer look this weekend after we finish installing the lift, jeep wheels, and front bumper on the Wrangler.
