If your planning on aluminum heads I would go with a custom cam. There are a few reputable cam grinders out there, I went with Ed Curtis at FTI for my 331 90 mustang. He did an excellent job choosing a cam for my motor and intended use. He comes highly recommend on corral.net.

If you replaced a lot of ignition parts with parts store replacements I would start there looking for your miss. Install original parts or find motorcraft to see if miss goes away.

Strain or filter old gas and slowly mix in gas tank with new gas.

I'm not saying you can't do it because I don't know your mechanical ability but you might consider fixing current motor or sell as is and cut your losses. V8 swaps aren't rocket science but ain't really a good place to start for beginners. Good news is I have a complete 98 mountaineer 5.0 minus...

Why would someone shave a cam? Roller cams don't wear like flat tappet, buy a used one, save some money.
