02 4.0 SOCH, sounds like a Mack truck going down the road, rpm normal running at 1500 to 2000, no speedo, shifting normal, but engine is really loud. any clues?

I'm not exactly sure what a Mack sounds like.

You have some ticking or rattling... knocking... what? These 4.0L SOHC engines are typically pretty smooth with very little top end noise. Unless... you're having trouble with timing chains... guides and tensioners.

It could also be also be accessory drive belt tensioner and or idler. A/C compressor clutch... etc...

One thing is for sure... I would figure it out before I drove it even a mile further. If you have a timing chain failure of any kind... you will likely need a replacement engine.

It was like that when I found it.
^^^ What he said!
I could see things being a bit loud if you had a 4.0 OHV like me. Mine has some of that well described top end rattle but it always has. I thought the SOHC were much better but no direct experience. Sounds like you may have other bad issues if it's not just a bad exhaust or in the belt drive.

The newer MP7/MP8 engines are quieter then the older E7 ASET engines at idle. The turbo screaming really drowns out any engine noise at 30 psi at or above 1200 RPMs. The E7 were kinda loud and clacky at idle, but that did quiet up some as the RPMs went up.

The high pitched howl from the turbo on an MP7 for 30 minutes to an hour while doing a parked regen gets old fast.

Google: Ford 4.0L SOHC Death Rattle - What does it sound like?

See if that noise is similar to what you have

If so engine will need to come out and both long chain guides and chains will need to be replaced, and good idea to do short chains as well

i dont think its anything that major, nothing loose. it seems to take a really long time for the tranny to shift though, it used to be normal quick, and with the high engine rev sound, the shifting is porolonged. at ide it sounds normal.

Its not the death rattle by any means. It's high revs on the engine, above normal from what ive seen. It usually runs at 1500 rpm throughout the shifting (auto), now it runs 2000, and sounds like a Tractor Truck with a load in very low gear. High engine revs, little movement.

I ordered fan clutch, fan, and water pump as a unit from rockauto, since im there and I read the very good write up for changing t-stat and t-stat housing on this forum. Unrelated to all this, but its all related right. Ive been trying to get the right speed sensor for my speedo, since 2 of the local auto shops, and thats all we have here get me the wrong part. I was wondering if anybody knew of a supplier/ part number for that sensor. I think its the one on the drivers side, on the side of the transmission, right behind thing auto shift linkage. Just maybe with the fan replacement and this sensor replaced the little truck wont sound like it taching out. and really long upshifting. I go up the slightest grade in the road and it downshifts quickly and slows way down. I've done a transmission oil and filter change. the level is good, water is good. Could this all be related to a fan clutch.

On a 2002 Ranger the "speed" sensor is called the OSS sensor, Output Shaft Speed sensor, it is on the transmission but toward the rear and higher up on drivers side

There is an ISS sensor near the shift linkage on drivers side

Look here: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/YLPi4iAJWeQ/maxresdefault.jpg

See the two red plugs, the one toward the rear and up higher up is the OSS sensor, the one you want to change, if you have a CODE that says its bad, or multiple "ratio" transmission codes

The actual Speed Signal that the speedometer shows comes from the engine computer, the PCM, but it bases that signal on OSS, + rear axle ratio, + tire size

For OSS part number try 6L5Z-7H103-B

The ISS(intermediate shaft speed) sensor won't effect speedometer but can effect shifting and it will set different Codes if its failed or failing
