Well be tenting as long as its not going to rain. Were no strangers to camping when its cold, most every year we tent for a week in Northern Maine during september so we're used to it.

How necessary are skidplates? I'm thinking I'll buy some to protect all my stupid plastic oil pans and such. Sliders would be nice. Peer pressure leads to dented rockers relatively easily..

I think it's early enough I can potentially plan to make this one. My transmission needs some attention before that abuse and I'm not sure my truck could keep up with Chicago traffic

As necessary as you want them to be.

All I have ever done with skidplates is dip them in water so far.
