Currently has P225/70R14 tires
The truck is not driven real regular and I'm try to get away for the least I can for new tires.
P195/70R14 tires are over $100 less. I check the actual measurement differences. I know the speedo will be slightly off and they will wear out quicker, but are there any real problems?

Is anyone doing this or has done it?

For what it's worth, the P195/70R14 is listed in the sales brochure and spec book for the 1994 Ranger (it's the smallest size listed). Can't recall if I've ran that size before (probably), but I'm guessing that you'd be OK if you keep it below 120MPH. : )

The tires in question are smaller, so the truck will move slower by about 4 mph than indicated. Assuming that the original size was reading accurately. Rangers tend to indicate about 2 mph fast in my experience. So, you might actually be going 6 mph slower than what the speedometer is telling you. I used this site to figure out the tire size and rough effect to indicated speed.

I did that size swap with my 92 2.3 ranger. reg cab/2wd/3.73’s , didn’t notice much difference, was a cheaper tire to buy.

I'm not really a fan but Firestone seems to have the best price here. Just under $300 for the 195's, installed, out the door

225-70R14 is 225mm wide. Profile is 70% of width. Radial Tire, fits 14 inch rim.

195-70R14 is 195mm wide. Profile is 70% of width. Radial Tire, fits 14 inch rim.

So, your 225/70 tire has a profile of 157mm. It is a total of 26.36 inches tall.

Your 195/70 tire has a profile of 136.5mm. It is a total of 24.748 inches tall. That's a height difference of 1.61 inches.

the wheels should be 15x7", the tire 235/60/15

You’re right I’m smoking something again, there’s a 6.9% increase in circumference. So at 60 mph your at 4.1 mph over your speed using a 225 vs a 195 with the same sidewall listed 70 profile. Kinda the same reason we always ran taller tires with the old 3 spd trucks that ran the 3.07 rears just to gain mph for the highway. No need for me to ramble on. What’s the factory tire size for the truck? I’d say stick to it if you don’t want speedo inaccuracy. And everything else you said sk.

I would go to a website like Tire Rack, for example, and look up 225/70's in a tire you like, then look at the chart showing available sizes and compare diameter. A 75 series tire is usually cheaper than a 70 series along with being taller so maybe a 205/75 would save you a little money and not throw the speedometer off so much. A shorter tire will make the speed show higher than it really is, a taller tire will make it read slow and could get you a ticket.
