Have a "marbles in can" rattle (rattle is the best word I can find to use) after upshifting to next gear. Noise tapers off and disappears as rpms increase. Noticeable at all shifts. Kind of like a "lugging" sound. Recently replaced clutch and this noise which used to barely be there is now much worse and super annoying. Thought it might be ujoints or slip yolk but I replaced ujoints and lubed slip joint. There arent any loose exhaust shields or underframe parts. Has 154,000 miles. Seems to originate under vehicle or near transmission.

If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
Tap on your cat with a rubber hammer to see if it rattles.

Yep, I tried that, solid sounding. Also, after the clutch replacement, I made sure both of the driveshafts went back on like they came off. I think in my many experiences of driving stickshifts, I have heard similar sounds when shifting too early, a gravely rattling until the engine picks up some more rpms, but this happens even if I stretch out the shift points.

Do you think it's spark knock or pinging in the engine?

Was curious if it was a 3.0. They have to be driven at high rpm. He may be expecting torque where there is none lol.

It might be helpful if we knew the engine size...

You sure you got a good seal on the exhaust... maybe when the engine is torqueing up it creates a leak.

I would tune into the noise and be really sensitive to any vibration that might be created along with the sound. Might help in narrowing down the origin.

It is a 4.0. Everything was fine until I replaced the clutch, slave, pilot bearing, flywheel, and throw out bearing. I rechecked the manifold to header pipe bolts and they are tight. This is so baffling. No it isn't pinging or spark knock. The engine purrs like a cat when idling, so quiet, only faint clicking from the valve train. Run synthetic oil. I am starting to wonder if there is some mismatch in the balance from the flywheel on back. When I pulled everything apart I noticed all rotating parts had a small green dot, even the flywheel, however I couldnt quite make sense of those green dots. And the new fly didn't have any marks on it, and the driveshafts I marked myself to get them back on right. Maybe this is the straw which breaks the camels back? Time for a new truck?

Be very careful running synthetic in an ohv. Bad stuff can happen from a lack of zinc. Valvoline racing synthetic and a few others are OK. All Mobil products are banished from my shop. Mobil kills pushrod engines.

This is my old cam vs the new stock replacement. Granted, 280k MI, but I blame Mobil 1 and a lack of zddp for some of it.

This is quickly turning into @Shran, @Dirtman, and @adsm08 territory. I am NOT a transmission guy.

No idea. Any time you have moving parts in contact with each other there is a potential for noise. Manual transmissions fit that bill.

As for ZDDP, I run diesel oil.

4x4? Manual tcase? One of mine rattles at certain rpms because one of the plastic bushings on the tcase shifter is missing.

Well some followup is due here. I finally found that the noise was coming from the transmission. Now here's the dumb part...after my clutch replacement and hurry to get everything back together, I found out I didnt tighten all four screws for the plastic cover plate which covers the hole where the shifter comes through. After tightening ALL four screws, wow, no more noise! At least I can't hear it! Back to how it used to be!!
