Hi I have a quick question I found a ranger for sale that the guy says is a 1999 ext cab 78,000 miles 2.5L 5 speed stick with 3.73 axle gears, he also says that it is a electric shift 4x4. he is the first owner. the truck is 3 hours away from me.

I was wondering if any one knows what year ford stopped building the 2.3/2.5 with 4x4, I thought that it was 1996 or 1997.

I know from reading the forums here on trs that it is a simple swap to install a 4x4 front end in a 2wd, I dont know if he did that or figured out how to special order one. I just want a better idea of what I will find before I drive that far.

I emailed the guy so maybe he will get back to me about whether it was a factory 4x4 or a swap-he doesn't seem to do any work on the truck himself, takes it to a shop which makes a swap seem unlikely.

Thanks for any info you guys can give

There's a simple solution: ask him to send you a few pix or get the VIN. The VIN is a sure-fire way to make sure what he's saying is a factory 4x4 IS a factory 4x4.

Got any pics? I am 99.99% sure that there never was a 4th gen 4banger 4x4. Does it have ttb or ifs? Something is swapped... whether it be the suspension, engine, or just the front clip... My guess is it's a 3rd gen with a swapped clip. Or he's just retarded and said '99 when it's not.

:worthless:

ive seen a 2wd 98 ext 2.5l but not a 4wd ext 99

thought something like that would be to heavy for the I4

could it be the elusive 2.5l diesel ranger from overseas imported:drool:(doubt it, maybe engine swap)

some people can't tell the difference between 4 and 6 cyd's

I just got it figured out the first email said
"The engine is the small four cylinder"
I asked how many liters displacement it was and he just sent me another email that said
I looked under the hood and the label above the radiator says it is 3.0 EFI. I assume that means it is the 3 liter motor and has electronic fuel injection.
So it is not a four cylinder after all, apparently the guy can't count how many spark plug wires he has. :annoyed: :icon_confused: anyhow it explains how it has factory 4x4. He just sent me the VIN also and it confirms a 3.0L 4x4.

Thanks to all who replied to my original post

Correct. As far as I know, beginning in 1998 the 3.0 was standard on 4x4's.
