Hey guys,
I just picked up a Weiand tunnel ram for a 302 in my 65 mustang. It was cheap so i got it, not really sure if i want to use it on this project though. My question is, on a 302 that is mostly stock with a mild cam, can I reasonably use this tunnel ram with smal 350,390, or 400 cfm carbs? I have been looking around and people are saying they use them with success on street cars, so im just wondering what everyones opinions are?
I also have a dual plane dual carb intake, would that be a better setup for this engine?
Thanks

in general, tunnel rams dont come alive till you get the R's really cranking.

even dual 350's I think is going to be to much carb for a mostly stock 302.

tunnel ram would be ok on a 11.5:1 plus, 240@50 plus duration cam on a 302 with deep gears and a high stall converter.3000 or better

I think you would get better over all perforance out of a highrise dual plane (like a edelbrock rpm type) intake and a 600 cfm carb on a mostly stock 302

That's what I went with on mine - GT40 heads w/ upgraded springs, intake is advertised 1,500-6,500, B303 cam is advertised 1,500-6,500, 600cfm carb. But have yet to see how it turned out, still some odds and end I need to get and haven't had time to work on it.

Learned my lesson when I bought a 327 with shitty heads that had a Victor Jr intake and an aggressive lunati cam. No power brakes until about 2,000 RPM. :icon_twisted:

Been down that road

2 650'S,Alot of head work on 351 heads,300 duration cam with roller rockers,Flat top forged at 9.5-1 .040 over.Right at 3000 stall.
Dont ever let anyone tell you a small block Ford cant take 2 fours.

Go with the dual plane and a good carb.It was a lot of work getting this setup right.I had some help from an old hot rodder who ran 2 fours on small and big blocks.
I changed to this set up a while back because my plans for the truck changed. But there's nothing like popping the hood of a Ranger and seeing a tunnel ram and 2 Fours.......lol.:shok:

Copperhead that is awsome. And i just remembered about some roller rockers for a 302 you told me about long ago, still have them?
Im thinking ill just hold onto the tunnel ram for the day i find a car to drag race. I still have another 302 laying around. I wouldnt mind stroking it, high compression pistons for it, heads, cam, blah blah blah, and throwing that intake on just as a street car. Maybe a 2500 or 3000 stall converter and c6? If i find a car that is.

Yeah, and I'd put pinks up that my 8.8:1 Edelbrock 600/Performer RPM 302 would crap all over that setup. There isnt a 302 on the face of this earth that could use 1300 CFM's, or a cam with that duration and that little of compression. I bet it sounded wicked at a stop light though :icon_thumby:

The best setup for a basically stock 302 would be an Edelbrock Performer/Weiand Stealth manifold and your choice of 500-600 CFM carb. If your never going to build a 12:1 302 that'll twist 8000 RPM you really have no need keep that tunnel ram around. Sell it off and buy a manifold that will actually work with what you have. If your really stuck on the whole "dual carb" thing, run the dual plane manifold and some 390 Holleys or some old 400 Carters if you can find them.

use the ram with twin impco 425 propane mixers! :yahoo:

i am planning on using two on mine, BUT not with a tunnel ram, i will be using an edelbrock air gap dual quad intake.

It was setup at first for dirt drags running paddle tires in 2 wheel drive. The reason for lower compression was a 200 HP nos kit that was never installed.the local track fell thru. The carbs had a lot of work done to them by someone who REALLY knew what they were doing. It had no problem sucking down all 8 barrels.

I bought some Dana 60's for Bogging but sold them for double my money before I could put them in.

LOL, I love the look of dual carbs. I'd probably have a hell of a time getting them tweaked in right though. That truck has to be a lot of fun regardless. Are you going to run a similar setup with your 351?

I never heard anyone say you couldn't put dual quads on a SB Ford. But I have heard many pros say that its a waste and the engine can't use all the flow they offer.

well
my 67 302 stang has the highest lift hyd. cam I could get, a six cylinder tranny torque converter for higher stall, a 4.63 rear, 11:1 comp (as I recall:icon_confused:)
and
two Carter AFB's on a dual plane.
I used staged linkage and the car runs faster in the quarter-mile with both carbs, slower when I disconnect the 2nd one.

oh, by the way, it gets around 8-miles to the gallon

Maverick...........At 160 ft Track in loose dirt.........................I would have needed another trailer to bring your truck home........:D...:icon_cheers:
You probably would, as I have traction problems for that distance on pavement :D

Who said anything about a truck? I'd have to throw a set of dirt tires on the Mav :icon_rofl: I'll bring a friend to drive your truck home :thefinger:

You would have to have one hell of a gas card to drive that setup back to Cali!
