It would cost me around $1,000 to rebuild the engine. I would buy a remain head, hone the cylinders, Install new pistons, rings, bearings, oil pump, gaskets and freeze plugs. When I rebuilt the 2.3L in my old 97 Ranger, the only part I had done at a machine shop was installing the pistons on the rods. What's your estimate of your total cost so far plus the cost of the engine rebuild? Will you send it out to the machine shop and do the assembly yourself or send the engine itself and let them do the rebuild but you install it, or just drop off the truck and let them do all of it?
