Not a maverick, but whenever I get a uhaul trailer I tell them I need to move a '93 ford festiva lol.

Yeah, if I rent one I tell them a geo metro hatchback, lol.

Once I tried to rent a tow dolly to move a reg cab 8’ bed F-150 and use a F-350 dump to pull it. They said no, tow vehicle not big enough. Uh, pretty sure the dump that’s rated to pull over 10k is heavy enough, thanks.

Any idea how they come up with ratings? I'm pretty sure I've heard of instances where they had something rated for X but slashed that number (without any actual changes) to get into a different vehicle class for tax reasons or something. I bet low ratings are due to some strenuous test... stopping distance from 60mph and max brake temp or something.

SAE Standard J2807: It's a 30 page engineering document for anything under 14k lbs GVWR. (And as Engineers get more creative about passing the test, it gets revised to be more stringent).

Summarized:​

Test requires a 150lb driver, 150lb front seat passenger, any option that adds weight found in 30% or more of vehicle i.e. if full size spare, power windows and a/c are found in >30% of vehicles, test vehicles need to have them. And there are some standards for hitches - no un-obtainum here. And there are standards for the trailers (Originally, they were Wells Cargo Utility trailers or equivalent) I think they allowed as light as 10% tongue weight​

Acceleration: On level ground, 0 to 30 in <12 seconds, to 60 in <30 and 40 to 60 in <18 seconds. Launch up a 12% grade both forward and reverse (and repeat 5 times in succession).​

Deceleration: Stop from 20 mph within 80' Parking brake must hold combination on 12% grade​

Equivalent simulation to Davis Dam grade (3,500' in 11.4 miles) must maintain 40 mph, starting temp 100 F with A/C on max cold/fan on max.​

There are some handling tests- think going around a clover leaf. i.e. no under/over steer while cornering at 0.4 gs​

There is also J684 trailer couplings and hitches, which surprisingly, still doesn't recognize Class V (or VI) hitches.

I wonder what that would do to insurance, if you were in an accident where you were at fault. I can just see U-Haul going to your insurance company and saying "he said he was hauling a Tempo. See, here, on the paperwork, it says he was hauling a Tempo." And your insurance company says "Hmm, he had an F150 on that trailer." And your insurance company says "U-Haul doesn't rate your vehicle for towing an F150, and you told them you were hauling a Tempo. Claim denied." I don't know how your insurance company works, but mine, if they deny my claim because I was doing something that voided my insurance, pays out the other party's claim, and then sues me.

Theres a decent hill (not long but very steep) on 127 by my house. One day coming home i seen a 2nd gen ranger with what sounded like a 2.3 drop 2 gears and absolutly scream (i dont think it had much exhaust) up it towing a crown vic on a dolly. Made me laugh lol.

My green 00 (ext-cab, 4.0, auto, 4x4) has towed Bronco IIs and Explorers (4-door) on tow dollys.

My F-150 has done Explorers on a tow dolly and a 14’ box truck flat towing. Must’ve gone past 6 cops towing the box truck and none rolled out on me…

*edit, since it’s been brought up, I would like to note that with the exception of two Bronco II moves with my first Ranger, everything else has been with my own equipment or that owned by friends and family.

The heaviest i flat towed with rusty #2 was my neighbors 3/4 ton ram when...surprise....the trans took a shit. I only had to move it 100 yards back to his driveway....but it was uphill lol.

The 3/4 ton I flat towed was dads ‘05 superduty, the alternator had went out and it fully died about 5 miles from home. It was hooked to a trailer at the time. I didnt tow both. We unhooked the trailer and pulled the truck forward, hooked up to the trailer and backed it into a farm field driveway then started the trip home with the little truck pulling the big truck. I never got over 30 mph and no higher than 2nd gear. Got it home, glad I wasn’t driving the big truck with no power steering.

Here’s the workinest Ridgeline I ever seen. I don’t recall ever hearing that the Ridgeline ever had a place in the truck world. Wonder why the Maverick is getting so much love (and hate, I know, but love too). Is it a brand thing? Since Ford has acknowledged the utility of a unibody truck, it’s ok now?
