hello, i have this 1986 ford ranger and i am unsure on what transmission that is currently has. it either has the Mitsubishi FM145 trans or it has the Mazda M50D-R1 trans. the shifter is the plastic ball that moves the pins in the transmission. i am just wondering what shifters i can upgrade too if there is any because i am no too fond of how the shifter moves and is so sloppy when shifting in between gears. so if anyone knows what aftermarket shifters that i can use to elimintate the slop that it has please let me know or reach out to my email (gavinhphelps@gmail.com)

In this tech article it describes how to look at the bottom the transmission to determine what you have. If it's original it's more than likely the FM145, but these trucks are pretty old and anything could have been swapped in place.

I have the FM145, and the shifter is not sloppy. I would pull the seats, pull the carpet back, and take the boot and the shifter out and see what the problem is. Junkyard is most likely your only choice for parts although there is a place in this link that sells shifters if you want to spend the money.

This is assuming you do indeed have the FM145.

Is this kit intended to fix a FM145 shifter and if so where does the ball shaped bushing go.
Its what came up when i searched for that part for an FM145. Usually they go on the bottom of the shifter but im not 100% familiar with the mitsu trannys
