You might want to look up the valve on an auto parts web site so you know what it looks like.

Everything I worked on has had it moved to the back of the truck. So, I can’t help you on a location of where it might be in the engine bay.

My '98 3.0 had it in the back above the spare tire, same place and valve but different canister shape on the '03 4.0

so you’re saying it’s on the fuel tank ? because i’ve seen a picture of the part and i can’t find it in the engine bay, on the things you’ve seen where is it? in the fuel tank or somewhere else on the back of the truck

On the ‘98+ Rangers, it’s mounted right in front of the spare tire carrier right next to the charcoal canister.

What he said. Mine is literally on the front edge of the 'donut' that positions the spare tire. It's a million times easier to get to by simply dropping the spare tire. Same location on my '98 and the '03 The '98 had a metal canister, the '03 had a plasatic one that the thread insterts broke out of when I removed it. Zip ties and bailing wire are your best friend!

Which leads us back to post number 2 where I suggested looking up the part for a picture so you know what it looks like. Beyond that, I can't help you.
