External Hard drive disappears

Tried using it in a different PC, just to see if maybe there is something going on with the computer?

I had a similar issues with a portable hard drive, but it only happened on the computer.

I wonder if it's because the HD was first used and formatted on windows and now being used with MAC?

It's my personal computer at work. I'm not allowed to plug in anything with memory not job related into the work computers

IDK what the equivalent is. LOL this is my first MAC adventure and its starting out bad, frustrating me to the point saying F it.

I'm trying to recover video from the 2TB so I can edit it with Filmora.

I've switched cords, ports, sockets, seats, shirts, nothing. Works for less than 5 minutes, then disappears. The ONLY way to get it to see it is to unplug it, then plug it back in, for a few minutes before it go ghost on me.

If I pick it up and slam it on the ground I will then KNOW why it isn't working. But I have a lot of stuff I want/need off of it first.

Some of those older MyBook units are flaky. But, they have standard drives in them. You should be able to just crack the thing open and put the drive in another external USB enclosure. But, I believe WD may do some kind of encryption or a proprietary format. So, you may not be able to access the data after doing that. That means that the thing to do is offload the data if you can keep it working long enough to do so in the current condition and then copy it back after you migrate it to another enclosure.

what is the format of the hard drive? the Macs don't like modern formats like NTFS, and since the drive was originally used on Windows that may be the issue.

first of all... Mac... lol hate them things. try a different usb port on the same computer and see if the problem persists, but other than trying it on another computer (windows preferably) I think you have done all you can testing. I am guessing that the harddrive itself is going bad and blinking out on you. get the data off of it asap and put it on another drive. if nothing else, get it backed up to the cloud or a bunch of USB thumb drives.

Worse case, you may be able to bring it to a computer repair shop and have them transfer the date to a new hard drive.
