I decided I'm gonna take the bed off my truck and replace a couple of the cross rails, paint the bottom and the rear of the frame, and drain and clean the fuel tank but wanna take my time but also not have the truck un-driveable during the process.

So anyone ever make a temporary wood flatbed? Or have any other ideas to keep it legal to drive while the bed is being worked on?

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Check local laws. I have seen vehicles with a cross bar (often wood) attached at the rear of the frame and tail light/brake light/ turn signals fastened to that.

Otherwise, add a 5th wheel hitch and call it a semi without a trailer. Don't forget mud flaps.

Laws in different states vary, but I would think that as long as there is some sort of fender (like) coverings over the rear tires and there is something to function as a bumper on the rear of the frame with lights & red reflective tape attached, you'd be legal (don't forget to attach the rear license plate too).

Wood is expensive right now.
There’s a 6’ bed on FB marketplace in Little Egg Harbor for $600. You could buy that, use it for a while, then resell it when you’re done.

Your back bumper can be left on or put back on

I cut up a 55gal drum to make some trailer wheel wells

You can weld on a couple brackets for taillights you just need 1 dual filiment bulb on each side, unless you also want reverse lights, lol

I dunno about buying the bed but I definitely wanna go hang out with that guy based solely on his obscene amount of yard clutter...

If that bed isn't rusted out, it is worth it. Frankly, the beds on these trucks rust pretty good.

I fixed up mine with some c channel and angle iron. It will hopefully last quite awhile. It also took quite awhile to do it, but then again that was only working on it on weekends here and there.

Yeah... he’s got a good 20-30% more property value decreasing junk than I do.

If you are in Texas, just zip tie the tail lights on and your license plate with light and you are good
