Resumed work on the red Ranger. Had dad help with turning over the motor so I could get the torque converter nuts on. Got the other valve cover gasket done and went to get the fuel rail and upper intake on. Figured I’d shoot some brake clean to get the bulk of the oil out of the intake and instead of just oil I found metal chunks. A lot of them. Not sure how I feel about that, but I spent some time cleaning it and ran out of daylight. Perhaps tomorrow I can get back on track.

Funny you say that. The girlfriend is a Mopar girl who drives a chevy. I have been DD’ing my F-150 which has been my most reliable ride…

John Deere Green! I have a few leftovers and I figured tractor implement paint might hold up.

Little more progress yesterday. Valvetrain all in, lash set and rechecked(twice) and got a measurement on how much I need to cut the front and rear rails on the intake since this block is zero deck and the old one was bone stock.

I think I may have already asked you this, but, why a gen1 instead of an LS?

So yesterday I finished cleaning the intake of debris and got that along with the fuel rail put back on. Had a few minor issues in the process. Also noted that my tensioner was pretty much fully extended which put the belt rather close to the factory cold air intake thingy in the red Ranger. Checked the belt and it’s correct and not all that old. Guess it wasn’t an issue in my green Ranger because the design was different. Couldn’t see any reason why a shorter belt wouldn’t fit so today I got a shorter belt. Fits beautiful. Not sure why this belt wouldn’t be correct. Puts the tensioner about halfway extended. Computer called for 883K6, I used an 880K6. Put a couple other bolts in, but was working between raindrops, or more precisely storms today

BTW, does anyone have any idea the difference between factory and dealer AC in a 92 Ranger. I found notations of the two on some parts, but can’t actually find a difference

Why should I pay someone else to screw it up when I can screw it up myself for free?
Drove 550 miles back from Oregon today, got 21.6 mpg. I now have over 3000 miles since I bought it and changed the oil; it used less than 1/3 qt in 2500 miles; not bad for a truck with 217K on it. Front left brake pad dragging a bit I so need to check that out tomorrow. Hopefully just a sticky caliper slide, it did pull very slightly to the left. The wheel was kinda hot to the touch so hopefully the hub didn't get too hot also.

I changed the oil. Two things interesting about this oil change: The first is that I've stopped by the auto section at Walmart for the last month and they have been either out of the particular brands of oil I like or oil filters. I ended up buying an oil filter two weeks ago and just figured at some point I'll find the oil I want in a brand I like. There appears to be a shortage of motor oil and filters. The second interesting thing to note is I usually buy Motorcraft, sometimes Chevron, Castrol or Valvoline. Since I usually change the oil at more frequent intervals than needed I never bothered buying any of the "better" oils. I've noticed those top end engine noises vary with some brands and engine temperature. I made a quick stop at Walmart on Thursday and the only 5w-20 on the shelf was Castrol Edge, so I bought that so I can just do the oil change and get it over with. I've noticed I don't hear those noises with this oil. I just thought that was interesting.
