Its probably better to be self deprecating than self defecating.
Really want a QUALITY butterfly knife, or some sort of OTF auto.

Good brands?

Not looking to spend Benchmade money here. 100-150 bucks would be good.

Not sure what a butterfly knife is, some of the Benchmades start out around there. Like a Griptilian or Bugout.

I just picked up a mini adamas, I really like it. A tad out of your price bracket though (I cashed in gift cards)

That mini Adamas is nice! My brother has the full size. Looking for an out the front though, rather than a folder.

What is the real world practical use of a butterfly knife besides flipping them around to look cool in movies?

What's the worst that could happen?
The balisong. Perfected and made popular by the Filipinos during the Japanese occupation. They weren't allowed to carry weapons (machetes), but the balisong could be folded and tucked into the waistband. You can pick one up cheap, hand made and legal in Taal for about 12 bucks (inflation). You just have to figure out how to get it home.

The problem is that it multiplies your cool factor by 0...

Deengineer until it is how Blue Oval should have sold it!!
Blmpkn,

Check out SOG, they are a Seattle company and they cater to the US military and make nice stuff. The first one I'd seen was a friend's pocket knife. It was the Trident ($75ish) open assist model. It has many features I wanted so I kept my eyes open for deals.

I have himed/hawed over many models but finally pulled the trigger when I caught a sale at The local sporting goods joint. It was a Flare ($39), though I really liked it, I traded with a neighbor for a passing favor.

I later spotted a fixed blade SOG that I though would be useful, a SOG Ace. It is marketed as a camp knife, The Walmart carried them @ $27 but decided to do the "rollback"; I think it was $9 at that point.

I brutalize and punish this knife at every opportunity. I have made it a point and goal to misuse it to fail. So far no luck, it just shrugs off my abuse. It is my favorite!!!

If I were shopping for a knife it would be a SOG, if I forgot to bring one and I needed a blade in a pinch, I would go to The Walmart and grab another $7.97 open assist from the case (Ozark Trail Assisted Opening 6312) and be on my way; actually a very dependable knife).

I always forget about sog despite owning one. I forget the name but it's a big bastard I got at the local surplus store. I'll definitely give their website a look.
