So before you say that its normal I'm throwing the red flag up. 91 3.0L, auto,

The truck hasn't done this before but I got stuck in Seattle traffic on I-5 this afternoon stop/go for just under 20 miles taking 2 hours. Temp gauge normally hangs out just below the "N" in normal. While in stop/go traffic it hit the end of the "normal range" tab. The idle on the truck rose to about 1K, when normally its 700ish. It didn't overheat but I cranked on the heater and barely came down of the tab. I've been in stop/go traffic before with the truck and it went to 1/2 gauge were I would expect it to go.

Anyway, after passing the accident traffic pickup and gauge went down to were it normally sits. Came up to my exit ramp got stopped at the light, gauge started to rise. Started driving again and it went down. Sat a drive-thru and it started to creep up again.

The water pump was replaced in December. Do these trucks have a fan clutch? Or just a straight fan? I feel my issue is air not being pulled through the radiator at idle like it should.

If it is a fan clutch, good will have some resistance to almost none when cold and bad should just spin freely. Is that correct?

Thoughts suggestions?

Thank you advance.

Yes. That has a mechanical fan clutch. Sounds like it's worn out.

Ok, so I grabbed another beer, went outside, popped the hood, got wrenches out, went to put a wrench on the fan clutch and this thing is large. Larger than the one given to me. About 8" across. New one is about 6". I checked NAPA website with the part provided, says its for my vehicle and image matches what I received.

So I looked at the fan in the truck, there is about a 1" gap between the edge of the fan to the shroud. I always remember them being closer like 1/2" or less. Am I wrong about this?

Ok, I must have some sort of brain fart or just stupidity. But how the hell do you get this fan clutch off?

I can get a wrench on the stem of the fan clutch to turn it but I can not get the fan clutch removal tool to fit to keep the friggin' pulley from turning. What the hell am I doing wrong.

First of all, the tools are still in the box. They don't work that way. Secondly, you're probably using the wrong swear words and not enough of them.

That's all I can figure out from that picture.

My guess from the took kit is it they are the wrenches to unscrew the stem of the fan clutch off the w/p. I have to figure out how to keep the pulley from turning so I can unscrew the fan clutch.
